Travelling by train in Britain in 2024 is not exactly the romantic experience it once was. Timing disasters and basic failures at every level mean that rail travel in the country that invented the steam locomotive is now more Burma Railway than Orient Express. Still, there are some solaces – time spent buried in a book as the countryside disappears, slowly, through an unwashed window. Or rather, there were some solaces.
