NEW YORK (Reuters Breakingviews) - CANADIAN HOSPITALITY. Brookfield Asset Management is engaging in some self-serving generosity. On Thursday the Canadian property giant raised its bid to take private its listed commercial real estate arm, Brookfield Property Partners, offering minority shareholders $6.5 billion, or 10% more than January’s opening gambit.
Digging deeper is a Brookfield speciality. It similarly raised bids for GGP, Rouse Properties, Brookfield Office Properties and Canada Office Properties. This bump is bigger than usual, partly because Brookfield’s own shares have risen in the meantime. That’s despite the fact the group holds around 60% of BPP already. At Rouse and GGP it didn’t even have a majority stake. ....

It was a gamble when Brookfield Property Partners paid over $9 billion in cash for GGP’s 125-mall portfolio, but the company had a plan. Shortly after the deal closed in August 2018, Brookfield said it would “future proof” most of those malls, turning moribund properties into mixed-use “mini cities” by adding residential and office space.

AvalonBay Communities, Inc. Appoints Benjamin Schall President and Announces CEO Succession Plan

AVALONBAY COMMUNITIES, INC. (NYSE:AVB) announced today that Benjamin W. Schall has been appointed President of the Company and will join the Company s Board of Directors, effective as of a mutually agreeable date on or before February 1, 2021. Additionally, the Company also announced that Timothy J. Naughton, the Company s Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President, plans to retire as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the end of 2021 and that at such time Mr. Schall will be appointed as CEO and Mr. Naughton will remain on the Board in the position of Executive Chair.
Mr. Schall is currently the Chief Executive Officer and President and a trustee of Seritage Growth Properties, a publicly traded real estate investment trust (REIT) principally engaged in owning, developing and managing a diversified portfolio of retail and mixed-use properties throughout the United States.
