Andrew Knizner hit a three-run homer, Adolis García added a two-run shot and the Texas Rangers avoided a three-game sweep with a 6-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday night. Evan Carter also went deep as the reigning World Series champions erased an early 3-0 deficit and stopped Atlanta’s six-game winning streak. David Robertson worked 1 2/3 innings in relief and Kirby Yates got four outs for his third save.
Thanks to a second look on replay, the Phillies got a second shot at a rally and averted a sweep against the NL East champs. Trea Turner capitalized with a tying hit after a third out that was overturned on replay and Alec Bohm followed with a two-run single in a three-run seventh inning to rally the Philadelphia Phillies over the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Sunday. “You get some luck like that, kind of get the momentum back, and we got our guys going in the back end of the bullpen with a lead,” Bohm said, “and you kind of smell the win.”
The Atlanta Braves reworked the contract for newcomer Chris Sale, announcing Thursday a new $38 million, two-year deal with the left-handed pitcher acquired last weekend from the Boston Red Sox. In essence, the seven-time All Star gets an additional $10.5 million in guaranteed money without having to wait for a deferred payment, in exchange for committing to at least two seasons with the Braves rather than one. The 34-year-old Sale will make $16 million this season and $22 million in 2025.
The Atlanta Braves acquired outfielder Jarred Kelenic, pitcher Marco Gonzales and infielder Evan White from the Seattle Mariners on Sunday night for right-handed pitchers Cole Phillips and Jackson Kowar. The move added a veteran lefty to the Braves pitching staff, along with Kelenic, who at one time was one of baseball's top young prospect. In the process, Seattle cleared a chunk of salary off its payroll, giving up on Kelenic in order for the Braves to take the contracts of Gonzales and White.
While keeping up their search for starting pitching, the Atlanta Braves added another reliever to their bullpen Monday by agreeing to $30 million, three-year contract with right-hander Reynaldo López. The 29-year-old López pitched for three teams in 2023, combining to go 3-7 with a 3.27 ERA and six saves over 68 appearances with the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Guardians. The Braves, who had an MLB-leading 104 wins this past season but were eliminated in the NL Division Series for the second year in a row by Philadelphia, have been retooling their roster with an eye toward getting over the hump in the postseason.
The 2020s are starting to feel like the 1990s for the Atlanta Braves. After tying a major league record with 307 homers, the slugging Braves went down meekly to the rival Philadelphia Phillies in the NL Division Series for the second year in a row. Other than a stunning comeback in Game 2, when the Braves overcame a four-run deficit with a pair of two-run homers and a remarkable double play for a 5-4 victory, the Phillies totally dominated the best-of-five series.
When gossip spread among the Phillies that Bryce Harper — of all the superstars to poke — had been laughed at inside the Braves clubhouse, his teammates dared the slugger to deliver. Harper answered Orlando Arcia’s mockery with a mammoth three-run homer and a solo shot, glaring at the shortstop on each trot around the bases, and Philadelphia beat Atlanta 10-2 in Game 3 of their NL Division Series on Wednesday night. Aaron Nola (2-0) and four relievers combined to push the 104-win Braves to the brink of elimination.
