Over one long weekend, 24 campers wrote original songs and played a concert for hundreds. It was about so much more than the music.

Sometimes, Florida’s reputation of having notoriously pathetic winters isn’t the worst thing, because Thursday night, 69-year-old Elvis Costello came out to his first Tampa Bay concert in nearly half a decade rocking a plaid kilt with a matching tam hat, white knee-high socks, and a black button-down.

Before last weekend, the last time Ed Sheeran performed in Tampa Bay—or, for that matter, Florida period—was two years ago at Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park, on the ten-year anniversary of his debut album, + (pronounced “plus”). Since then, he has suffered a bout of COVID-19, lost his best friend Jamal Edwards, and was at his wife Cherry Seaborn’s bedside during a second pregnancy and simultaneous tumor diagnosis that couldn’t be resolved until the couple’s second child was born.

“Whenever we start playing that song, ‘Asphalt Meadows,’ usually all I can smell is weed,” Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard announced to a shoulder-to-shoulder packed Jannus Live Tuesday night.
