Surat to house state's 1st women's varsity | Surat News

SURAT: Vanita Vishram Institution will be the first women’s university with the state Assembly giving sanction for seven private varsities on Wednesday. Vanita Vishram Trust currently runs four colleges with 3,000 students of which three are self-financed institutes that will be governed by university. Ours is the only university for women in the state. We will provide job experience to our students while they study, said Ashwin Mehta, in-charge chairman of VVI.
VVU will offer exit plans to dropout graduation students. The students who complete the first year will get a certificate and for completion of the second year, the student will be given a diploma certificate. VVI has been running colleges for the last 22 years while it came into existence a century ago to support women in need. ....

Surat researcher's index predicts extreme weather conditions | Surat News

Surat: With the globe experiencing extreme weather conditions like very heavy rains and cyclones, India is no exception and especially the urban areas are the worst affected. With a vision to prognosticate the weather extremities, Niket Shastri, a city-based researcher, has developed an index that helps forecast heavy rain at least 24 hours in advance.
Shastri developed the Cloud Detection Index (CDI) during his doctoral study on “Remote sensing of atmospheric water vapour and its forms over the Indian region and was recently awarded PhD degree from Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT).
“Extreme weather conditions and its recurrence are being noticed since the past decade or so. Mumbai rains are an example. I, therefore, planned to develop some method with which we can predict the extreme weather conditions accurately and stay prepared,” said Shastri, assistant professor in the department of physics at Sarvajanik College of Engineering ....
