Hello: Deuce Spurlock

We are still playing catch-up, and hopefully I’ll have time to get through them all this week and put out a general recruiting update. Next up in the order they committed, 3* AL linebacker Tim “Deuce” Spurlock Jr. A name that Courtney Morgan suggested when he came onboard, Spurlock was invited to Michigan’s camp in June, hit it off with LBs coach George Helow, earned an offer, and seemed on the verge of committing in July before Michigan apparently told him to hold off while they pursued some A-1 targets, all but one of whom have since come off the board. That plus an extraordinary start to his senior season—Spurlock had 21 tackles, 6 TFLs and 3 sacks in one game this season—seems to have been what shifted him into the take category. He came up for the Rutgers game, committed before kickoff, and announced that Sunday. GURU RATINGS I should note that 247 is in the middle of a composite update so Spurlock might be in the 1,000s by the time the time you read this. He was at 994 when I started and 999 at 4:06 PM yesterday when I put this article in the hopper. Rivals: 6’2/220 ESPN: 6’2/200 247: 6’2/200 247 Comp 3*, 5.5, NR Ovr NR OLB, NR AL 3*, 78, #308 SE #52 OLB, #29 AL 3*, 85 (NR Ovr) #94 ATH, #38 AL 3*, 0.8527, #999 Ovr, #79 ATH, #42 FL 3.40* ➡ 3.61 ⬆ 3.42* ➡ 3.53 ⬆ Bottom row is a conversion of the above to a 5-star scale. Arrows show trend of recruiting rankings. An arrow is like a third of a star. The only movement in the rankings came when ESPN added Spurlock to their database recently. They’re also the most bullish—the other two sites have him ranked down where the 2-stars used to roam before their kind were decimated by FBS over-settlement. The extra 20 pounds reported by Rivals seems significant if we consider the program pays a lot of attention to size. My program source says Spurlock was 215 when they had him up here to camp last summer, and the school roster (via MaxPreps) reads 217. If his senior season continues as it has there’s a lot of room to move up. The Michigan recruiting comp here is exacting, if ancient (sorry coach, but we are). Roy Manning was listed at 6’2”/210 out of high school, and made the bottom of some regional lists as a “futuristic” SAM linebacker who could cover in space or blitz an edge. The more recent example is Devin Gil, who was ranked around the same spot but was also smaller and not as athletic. Michael Barrett and Dhani Jones are in range as well. Notes Twitter. Instagram. Film: Game highlights from Rivals. Junior film (at safety). From our most scouted 2022 signee to the least! Now that we've Michigan's incredible secondary class, we have to talk about how Michigan's linebacker recruiting went down. Whereas Don Brown was finding value with his Doom Rodentia, the new staff wanted NFL length, athleticism, versatility, and coverage. Boxy Brown commit Tyler Martin followed Brown out the door, and shoe-in Josh Burnham drifted off to Notre Dame. Despite a valiant, Devin Bush Jr.-level pursuit, they failed to pry system-ideal target/born Ute Lander Barton out of Utah. Michigan puppy dogged after Sebastian Cheeks long after that seemed lost, and seemed sure they would get Jeremy Patton over Texas, right up until Patton chose Baylor. In the meantime they let Aaron Alexander, an undersized, injured, Go Blue guy running back at Belleville, ride at the back of the class until they found him a landing spot with Brown's UMass. The other LB recruit outside the top-1000 they were keeping in their back pocket was a much better kept secret, and also one they were close to losing when they thought Patton was in the bag. When that went down, Michigan had to dispatch their recruiting A-team to reconnect with a recruit who, on the surface (6'2"/200, #93 LB, #1014 overall), was indistinguishable from Alexander (6'1"/205, #102 LB, #1064 overall). In a rare leak of internal scouting/discord, insiders learned that there was some anger that Spurlock's pursuit had lapsed, especially once they had their hands on the next wave of film. Despite appearances, Timothy Spurlock II was NOT Alexander. One of several prospects Courtney Morgan introduced them to, a growth spurt shot Spurlock from a faster than average 200-pound safety to a wide-chested, 220-pound (more by the looks of it) linebacker. He lost none of the speed, and his team took advantage of that versatility like a (mid-level Alabama division) high school version of Micah Parsons, allowing him to cover the slot, rush off the edge, or attack inside gaps. Michigan had him up for a workout in early summer 2021 and shot him up their short list. South Carolina was involved when Michigan hopped to the front of the line, Florida made a serious, last-minute run, and Auburn was always on Michigan's heels, including after an offer/visit combo meant to prevent Spurlock from committing in the first place. Had Michigan let off the gas a fraction longer, or not been flooring it to the finish line, they might not have made it. Sometimes when a program misses out on their A list they take pains to portray Option B as the equal. The vibe from State Street is they thought 4-stars Barton and Patton were the best two LBs in the country, and Spurlock was on par with Cheeks (top-150). Unfortunately they don't make their scouting public, and those who do were so late to this game they barely bothered. Maybe if we read between the lines we can tease out what Michigan thinks they "settled" for. [After THE JUMP: Poor man's Parsons]

Tuesday Recruiting Gets a Hundred Fakes

Michigan’s closing in on prospects at some positions of need, and adding guys to the board at a lot of spots where they’re less sure of their top options. So let’s check in on recruiting before this post gets pushed down by another Hello or Goodbye. The 2022 recruiting board lives here. Quarterback CA 3* Nate Johnson got a crystal ball from 24/7’s Sam Webb and a FutureCast from Rivals’s EJ Holland recently. Johnson ran a 10.49 100-meter-dash at a meet last weekend per his coach. For reference, Tyrone Wheatley put up a 10.46 at Michigan, Denard’s personal best was 10.44, and the mathematics of the Universal Standard Model of Quarterback Physics breaks down at around 10.42. Holland said as long as Michigan overcomes the distance hurdle, Johnson will be in the class. Matt Weiss working with Lamar Jackson (and Harbaugh’s history with Kaepernick) is helping convince the dual-threat Michigan would know what to do with him, a comp also shared by 24/7’s Brice Marich($). Utah and Oregon State will get their visits, and then I am guessing we’re on commit watch when Johnson visits in June. Holland also said Johnson ran a laser-timed 4.45, and gave a player comp to Marcus Vick, noting the elite athlete could play safety or wide receiver if quarterback doesn’t work out. Johnson might not be the only QB on the board however. Marich reports they’ve made contact($, info in title) with Cal commit/CA 4* Justyn Martin, who just had a pretty nice delayed junior season. Happy Trails: IN 4* Tayven Jackson committed to Tennessee. Best Guess: Nate Johnson and thoughts turn to Dante Moore in 2023. Running Back Lorenz reports that recent offeree LA 4* Trevonte’ Citizen is a longshot($), despite Michigan making a top ten cut. I’m not adding him to the board. Best Guess: Pursuit of Sawchuk goes to the moment Sawchuk signs with Oklahoma, add a Karan Higdon or Tavierre Dunlap type along the way. [After THE JUMP: Dashes]

Hello: Micah Pollard

As soon as Mike Macdonald and George Helow joined Michigan’s defensive staff, two names emerged right at the top of their recruiting board at Edge, both of them three-stars from Florida. The first, Mario Eugenio, committed last week. Today, Michigan secured the other one, as well as their sixteenth commit of the class, fourth linebacker of the summer, third edge prospect in three weeks, and second guy named M. Pollard since Wednesday.
Auburn thought they had this in the bag coming off their official visitation two weeks ago, when Pollard’s 4-star DE/DT cousin Caden Story said he and Pollard were likely to go to the same school. Pollard’s dad also grew up in Lanett, AL, near Auburn. But Michigan had their own bloodlines; Pollard is the nephew of Braylon Edwards, and the son of former Colts and Lions TE Marcus Pollard, who played with Harbaugh in Indy. Edwards was reportedly key in this recruitment, which I’m sure will be recognized by all the media shills who’ve been fanning “Braylon is feuding with Harbaugh” talk since the 2018 outburst.
This is also one of those recruitments that get the fans to hate us nearly as much as the more conservative elements of college football hate Harbaugh, because the rankings and program have such vastly different opinions. The rankings suggest the kind of guy Tom Allen usually pulls to Indiana, IE as far below the four stars as he is above the average MSU recruit. The offers are that plus Auburn. Meanwhile they’re popping champagne in Schembechler Hall over a recruitment that for Pollard’s future position coach dates back to Maryland. Agents Edwards and Ty Wheatley were dispatched to whisper sweet winged helmet nothings. The drift towards Auburn that the recruiting industry shrugged at set off a five-alarm fire on State Street. They did NOT want to lose this one.
What they've won is a pure edge; 247Sports’s Steve Lorenz called him “a perfect fit for the database shift” from their old DE/OLB/ILB categories to DL/Edge/LB. Apparently that has yet to reach the 247 scouts, who still have Pollard in the linebacker category:

That works out to a 3.72* in my scale, right next to Kevonte Henry. The other edge guys in the 3.70 to 3.80 range were Glen Steele (3.80), Shantee Orr (3.72), Noah Furbush (3.71), Taylor Upshaw (3.70), and Charlie Stumb (3.70). From there it goes Kwity Paye (3.66), Josh Uche (3.61), Frank Clark (3.59), and Jake Ryan (3.59), so it’s not exactly unheard of for a guy with Pollard’s recruiting profile to blow up. None of those guys were 200 pounds, but Clark was 205, Uche was 212, and Pollard has another year of high school left. For what it’s worth his Twitter profile says 6-2.5/210.
Pollard is still mostly a blank to two of the sites. ESPN added a profile recently but not a ranking. 247 gave him the “87” last February and left him there. Rivals didn’t have him ranked until December, and it’s been a roller coaster since. He moved up from a 5.6 (medium 3-star) to a 5.7 (high 3-star) this summer.
