Whatever Happened To . . .

I was thinking back on some of the targets we were really high on and some who even committed, only to later decommit. Wondering if the board had heard anything of past targets/decommits and their whereabouts. A few come to mind: Aubrey Solomon, Raylen Wilson, Andrew Rappleyea, Kevonte Henry, Mario Eugenio, Otis Reese, Are there any you can think of that it worked out for or didn't? What if they had stayed?

PORTAL PORTAL PORTAL: PORTAL

Portal! NEEDS The portal is a different game than recruiting high schoolers and for a team like Michigan they're generally looking for a few key plug and play pieces, especially since they've historically struggled to get undergrad transfers in. There does seem to be some movement on that front given a number of confirmed undergrad transfer offers, but we'll see how that actually plays out. Michigan does not seem to need anyone at QB, WR, DT, LB, or S at the moment. With the addition of OL LaDarius Henderson I would imagine that Michigan is pretty set there as well if they are able to keep the guards out of the NFL draft with NIL money. That leaves the following spots as ones of interest, ranked in approximate order of need: Cornerback. If DJ Turner and Gemon Green both go to the draft Michigan will be looking for a CB very hard. They will return Will Johnson and Mike Sainristil but they have nobody else who's seen a snap and no seemingly sure thing amongst the other freshmen or this recruiting class. Tight end. Michigan will have Colston Loveland and Max Bredeson back next year; because they are Michigan that means they are two short of a full crew. Matt Hibner got some time last year and may step up but there's no clear option at #4. Edge. Michigan will presumably lose Mike Morris. They bring back Eyabi Okie, Braiden McGregor, Derrick Moore, Taylor Upshaw (probably), and Jaylen Harrell. None of those guys is a burly anchor type and none of those guys is a sure thing to be a rush end. More lottery tickets here may be advisable. Running back. If Blake Corum heads to the draft Michigan has CJ Stokes and (probably) Kalel Mullings to take some of the load off of Donovan Edwards, but if a Braelon Allen-level mooseback is available to be 1B to Edwards's 1A there is clearly an interest from Michigan. Anyone short of that and Michigan might as well roll with what they've got. BPA. I mean if there's a dude, you know? One note: scholarship limits no longer exist at a school like Michigan. Do you know how many "scholarship" players Michigan carried last year? 88. The ones that didn't fit in the 85 just got NIL. We are no longer bothering to bother with the "how many" question. The best Pixar film since their acquisition is debatable, but Coco makes enough of the lists that I think it can serve for some consensus. It is a brilliant film, gorgeous, deep, and almost perfect except for one unfortunate uncanny valley (Spoiler Alert). See, for much of the movie this kid who's traversing the Land of Dead is doing so wearing skeleton facial paint to disguise the fact that he, unlike all the rest of this realm, still has his muscles and flesh. And you're thinking: Did none of these (ex-) people watch sports? Sport fan brains are wired to tell how much meat a player carries on his bones if nothing else. Swap Steve Breaston's jersey for Jason Avant's, and you'd still have to get 100 rows back to fool anybody. The latest moment like this was in Michigan's spring game. Nobody had seen Amorion Walker, the early enrolled wide receiver from the sandal gap of Louisiana, and nobody seemed to have accurate rosters of who was on maize or blue, but nobody who follows Michigan recruiting had trouble identifying #4. They would have known, for example, that ever since this Southerner whose catching radius has its own zip code had the best 40 time (4.41) and vertical (40 inches) at Bama's June 2021 camp, Michigan had worked extremely hard to pry Walker out of Notre Dame's class, and that Notre Dame everything short of abandoning their most hallowed tradition (losing to a mid-major school) to prevent it. They also might have known that Special Agent Ron Bellamy played for Walker's coach, that Sam Webb was alerted by the staff that they saw this as a 5-star recruitment, and he should get be on hand for the announcement on (early) Signing Day (Sam's second visit to see Walker). That everyone who saw Walker play apparently agreed with the two winningest schools with the nation's best scouting staffs, but couldn't bring themselves to rate the guy higher than 3 stars because he looks like a twig. Then the twig teleported past Will Johnson and settled in the soft spot in Cover 2. Okay, we see it. Now feed the boy. [After THE JUMP: Can we pay out NIL in meat?]

Notes Consensus AA, UA Game MVP, MD PoY. Twitter. Film: Senior Highlights: Hudl. Soph highlights. UA practice reps. Winning solves a lot of problems. Despite running through the 2021 season with, respectively, the best and fastest-rising defensive ends in the country, and lots of playing time to offer once they both left for the 1st round, Michigan's edge recruiting was flagging. The productive Mario Eugenio was in the class, then out when they kept recruiting his position. Kevonte Henry was in the class, then out when Courtney Morgan left. The staff was in early on Joshua Josephs but lost him to Tennessee, and lost Beau Atkinson to North Carolina, and let Joseph Adedire drift off to Texas Tech in the process. Late in the cycle the Aidan Hutchinson-esque Ethan Burke was in, then Texas yanked him out. But when you crush Ohio State 42-27, win the Big Ten, and go to the playoffs, suddenly you're in line for some opportunities that others don't get. For example, when Lincoln Riley left Oklahoma for USC, and the Sooners' class started coming apart, Michigan was able to swiftly move in and extract one of its best defensive pieces. It didn't hurt that this pièce de résistance played for Known Friend and Trusted Agent Biff Poggi, along with Blake Corum, Nikhai Hill-Green, and various other semi-pros to come through Poggi's national heavyweight St. Frances. He also turned out to be a greater coup than we all made of it; Moore obliterated the competition at the UA All-American game, was named MVP, and shot up to just outside the edge of 5-star territory. Tuesday Recruiting Gets a Hundred Fakes

Michigan’s closing in on prospects at some positions of need, and adding guys to the board at a lot of spots where they’re less sure of their top options. So let’s check in on recruiting before this post gets pushed down by another Hello or Goodbye. The 2022 recruiting board lives here. Quarterback CA 3* Nate Johnson got a crystal ball from 24/7’s Sam Webb and a FutureCast from Rivals’s EJ Holland recently. Johnson ran a 10.49 100-meter-dash at a meet last weekend per his coach. For reference, Tyrone Wheatley put up a 10.46 at Michigan, Denard’s personal best was 10.44, and the mathematics of the Universal Standard Model of Quarterback Physics breaks down at around 10.42. Holland said as long as Michigan overcomes the distance hurdle, Johnson will be in the class. Matt Weiss working with Lamar Jackson (and Harbaugh’s history with Kaepernick) is helping convince the dual-threat Michigan would know what to do with him, a comp also shared by 24/7’s Brice Marich($). Utah and Oregon State will get their visits, and then I am guessing we’re on commit watch when Johnson visits in June. Holland also said Johnson ran a laser-timed 4.45, and gave a player comp to Marcus Vick, noting the elite athlete could play safety or wide receiver if quarterback doesn’t work out. Johnson might not be the only QB on the board however. Marich reports they’ve made contact($, info in title) with Cal commit/CA 4* Justyn Martin, who just had a pretty nice delayed junior season. Happy Trails: IN 4* Tayven Jackson committed to Tennessee. Best Guess: Nate Johnson and thoughts turn to Dante Moore in 2023. Running Back Lorenz reports that recent offeree LA 4* Trevonte’ Citizen is a longshot($), despite Michigan making a top ten cut. I’m not adding him to the board. Best Guess: Pursuit of Sawchuk goes to the moment Sawchuk signs with Oklahoma, add a Karan Higdon or Tavierre Dunlap type along the way. [After THE JUMP: Dashes]
