A five-judge bench saw fit to bring up the Mandal verdict as it hears petitions on a Maharashtra law providing quotas for Marathas in admissions and jobs in the state.

Key Highlights
The historic verdict that is now under the spotlight is that from the Indra Sawhney v Union of India case.
The verdict was important, firstly, in outlining the criteria used to evaluate whether a particular group qualified for reservation. But the apex court also reiterated the 50 per cent limit to vertical quotas delineated in previous judgements delivered in 1963 and 1964. ....
