The statement came after China on November 24 demanded the Philippine government to "honor its commitment" and remove the grounded BRP Sierra Madre in the shoal. "As far as I know there is no such commitment. That ship has been there since 1999. If there was (a) commitment it would have been removed a long time ago," Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said. He underscored that Ayungin Shoal lies within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) where it has sovereign rights. "Our EEZ was awarded to us by the 1982 UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) which China ratified. Department of Foreign Affairs facade (PNA photo by Avito C. Dalan) MANILA - The Philippine government has filed 231 diplomatic protests against Chinese activities in the West Philippine Sea since 2016, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported Tuesday night. DFA Assistant Secretary Eduardo Menez, in a text message to reporters, said the notes verbales were all lodged during the time of President Rodrigo Duterte as of November 18. On November 18, the DFA publicly condemned and protested the Chinese Coast Guard for blocking and firing a water cannon on two Philippine boats that were en route to resupply Filipino troops who are stationed at the Ayungin Shoal. The boats, identified as Unaizah May 1 and Unaizah May 3, had to abort their mission on November 16 after one of them had its outrigger damaged by the water cannon. Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the two resupply boats returned and safely arrived at the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin on November 23. The incident not only ....
Department of Foreign Affairs (File photo) MANILA - A total of 153 out of the 211 notes verbales filed over Chinese actions in the South China Sea since the start of the Duterte administration have been filed in 2021 alone, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Thursday. The agency made the disclosure a day after it posted on Twitter a statement protesting China's "provocative acts" against Philippine authorities patrolling the country's waters. "The latest protest was issued on September 30, so yes the incidents in August are covered, but these types of warnings are SOP (standard operating procedure) by the Chinese just as our Coast Guards also issue warnings. The tweet was issued (October 20) upon instructions," DFA Assistant Secretary Eduardo Menez told reporters. The official said the Chinese side has so far responded to 151 notes verbales out of the number the DFA sent in 2021. One of the earliest protests was against the swarming of over a hundr ....
