This year's races for election administration positions will feature well-funded “stop the steal” candidates who appear ready to undermine elections to help their side win. These scenarios highlight a unique vulnerability of U.S. elections: the lack of safeguards against party or candidate loyalists holding important election posts.
In Vermont, lawmakers are considering bills to make it easier to prosecute people who threaten election officials. In Maine, proposed legislation would stiffen penalties for such intimidation. In Washington, state senators voted this month to make threatening election workers a felony.
Texas has refused to modernize and create an online voter registration system. As a result, communities across the state have less accurate voter rolls, and taxpayer money is wasted on paper.
“The idea that we still have a paper-based (voter registration) system is just absurd,” Travis County voter registrar Bruce Elfant says.
Between Jan. 1 and May 14, at least 14 states enacted 22 new bills that restrict access to the vote. Sixty-one bills are progressing through 18 state legislatures.
