I’m not sure which is more shocking, the tone-deafness of the author or the fact that the Sentinel saw fit to print the letter to the editor about Michele Obama’s activism.
Accusing Mrs. Obama of playing the victim when she speaks up about racial inequality in America ignores the fact that the former First Lady is continuing a tradition of famous people being involved in activism on issues for which they have passion. As the mother of two beautiful young women, why wouldn’t she want to make the world a better place for future generations?
Speaking out about racism she experienced is no more or less than sharing her own life story in order to make the point that there is systemic racism, even if one is accomplished and famous. It is a call for those of us enjoying white privilege to wake up to the reality of millions of Americans and join the call to dismantle the system. ....

May 23, 1872: The Herald and Tribune reported sad news regarding the death of a small child. “On last Saturday morning in this place, of brain fever, little Michael, son of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Shaver, in the fourth year of his age.”
Brain fever was very likely meningitis.
The Herald and Tribune was, and still is, a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way in 1872.
May 23, 1901: In a continuation of a story from the previous day, The Knoxville Sentinel reported on area flood damage. With a Johnson City dateline, readers learned, “This is the eastern terminal of the Knoxville division of the Southern Railway company for the present. Superintendent C.L Ewing and other officials of the road reached here Wednesday and spent the day planning to accommodate traffic. May 22, 1901: With a Johnson City dateline, The Knoxville Sentinel reported news about recent flood damage. “The Watauga, Chucky and Doe rivers (sic) are higher than ever known before. The Watauga river (sic) is seven feet higher than it was in 1867. The bridges at Watauga, Embreeville, Elizabethton, Chestoa, and other places are gone. At least fifty houses have been washed out of Elizabethton.”
“All save (sic) mills and lumber yards along these rivers are gone. The lumber mill at Watauga and the Wilder mill at Chestoa are destroyed.
“A train of loaded cars had been put upon the Watauga bridge and fifteen cars were lost. ....
