Democratic leadership stands with Israel

Reuters
Cowardly Democratic leaders continue to ignore the underlying grievances of Palestinians – apartheid, ethnic cleansing, occupation – and focus instead solely on the immediate violence.
Worse, once the current fighting ends, this leadership can be expected to return to managing the conflict rather than insisting root causes be addressed.
Such weakness is repeatedly seen in the comments and tweets of Democratic leaders.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated on Monday: “I condemn the escalating and indiscriminate rocket attacks by Hamas against Israel.
She added that Israel has the “right to defend herself against this assault, which is designed to sow terror and undermine prospects for peace.”

Pro-Israel demonstrators take to the streets of L.A. – The Forward

One day after some 200 protesters gathered outside the Israeli consulate in Los Angeles protesting against Israel’s actions in Shiekh Jarrah, Jerusalem and Gaza, pro-Israel supporters took to the streets for their own rally.
Around 300 hundred pro-Israel supporters gathered the Federal Building in West Los Angeles holding Israeli flags and signs that read, “We Stand by Israel.”

Israel conflict brings anti-Israel protests in L.A. – The Forward

The protests against Israel’s actions in Shiekh Jarrah, Jerusalem and Gaza — and the counter-protests — have reached the United States, though with far less violence.
In Los Angeles, some 200 people gathered Monday afternoon outside the Israeli Consulate carrying Palestinian flags and signs that read “Free Palestine” and “We support Palestine.” A young man and woman took turns at a PA system chanting, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” and “We don’t want a two state solution, we want ‘48.”

Israel-Palestinian violence: why East Jerusalem has become a flashpoint in a decades-old conflict

Weeks of tensions between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces in East Jerusalem have boiled over in recent days, unleashing some of the worst violence between Israel and the Palestinians in years.
Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have left 30 Palestinians dead, including ten children, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promising not to ease up anytime soon. Palestinians militants, meanwhile, have launched hundreds of missiles into Israel, killing three people.
Ostensibly, the rocket launches by Hamas were a response to Israeli police storming the al-Aqsa mosque compound in East Jerusalem on Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power, one of the holiest nights of the year for Muslims. The incident injured hundreds over the weekend.

Why East Jerusalem has become a flashpoint in the decades-old Israel-Palestine conflict
One of main drivers of unrest has been the conflicting claims to East Jerusalem, dating back to the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948.

As fires smoldered and warning sirens wailed in the streets of Jerusalem while rockets continued to rain down on the capital city, members of The Squad took to Twitter Monday to condemn Israel while remaining conveniently mum about the attacks launched by Hamas and other terrorists.
As Katie reported, Hamas "launched dozens of rockets into Jerusalem Monday to mark Jerusalem Day" while "Islamic Jihad, which also operates in the Gaza Strip, launched an anti-tank missile into Israel from the south."
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN) called Israel's counterstrikes that successfully took out Hamas terrorists "an act of terrorism" and called for Israel's defense of its citizens to be condemned.

In a matter of just two weeks, six Palestinian families, numbering 27 people, will be thrown out of their homes and into the street, and replaced with Israeli settlers.
The fate of the families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem is essentially set in stone: an Israeli district court rejected their appeal in February this year, ordering them to vacate their homes by May 2, 2021.
Another appeal filed by seven other families in Sheikh Jarrah, numbering 31 people, eight of them children, was rejected by the same Israeli district court in March, and the families were given until August 1, 2021, to evacuate their homes.
