'Ray' review: More hits than misses in this Netflix anthology

Express News Service
Like many of his films, Satyajit Ray’s short stories are an adolescent’s delight. The Feluda series looms over his literary output, but he wrote just as enthusiastically about benign aliens, insecure film stars and man-eating plants. Take the story Spotlight, which though narrated by a tertiary character — oozes his sense of mischief and psychological depth.
Often aimed at children, these stories have endured for their brevity and wit. When not making globe-conquering humanist dramas, India’s greatest writer-director was churning out his delicious 10-pagers. Inspired by his stories, three contemporary filmmakers have created Ray, a 4-part anthology series on Netflix. Ray himself would have approved of the format – his 1961 triptych, Teen Kanya, was the first of its kind in India.

Family Man season 2 review: An ambitious return of a stellar series

Express News Service
Srikant Tiwari is missing the game. His action hero days are clearly over, and he now stagnates in a dead-end job at a software company. Aggressively bored, he calls up his old partner, JK (Sharib Hashmi), who’s leading a covert operation in Chennai. JK gives him the lowdown: action, guns, hostages. Srikant’s face turns angry, desperate. It’s the look of a football player who’s been forced to grab a bench. Yet the coach is not to blame.
Srikant, played by Manoj Bajpayee, is on the slide. In the debut season of The Family Man (on Amazon Prime Video), he was a star spy, a master negotiator capable of disarming angry fanatics with his stories and smile. His fortunes have dipped exponentially ever since: he’s left the NIA, and harbours immense guilt over his previous mission even though the day was saved. Directors Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK don’t waste any more time tying up loose ends. Rather, in season 2, the drama turns to another taciturn soldier in exile.

'Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai' movie review| This Salman Khan-starrer is like a shot to the head- The New Indian Express

Express News Service
There's no impetus whatsoever to visit a theatre right now. Most of us already know this, which is why a Zee Plex viewing of Salman Khan's latest seems like the only choice. Yet, ten minutes into Radhe, you begin to regret the move. Everything looks too small and miniaturised. The sickly colour scheme floods the laptop screen. Bhai's entry shot, minus the hoots, is a glass-shattering mess.
Radhe, directed by Prabhudheva, is a remake of the 2017 South Korean drama The Outlaws. It was also rumoured that the film is a sequel to Wanted (2009), also directed by Prabhudheva, which Salman has denied. Still, ardent fans can draw the line.

We all start out as dreamers: Director Chaitanya Tamhane on The Disciple

Express News Service
Chaitanya Tamhane concedes his films are easily labelled as 'serious' or 'intense'. It’s a fair assessment. In 2014, he made Court, an acid critique of the Indian judicial system. The film was predominantly in Marathi, had a fringed musician as its protagonist, and, to most eyes, looked and felt like a serious indie.
All of which holds true for The Disciple, Chaitanya's second feature, about a young classical singer in Mumbai. But the films are also tied together in another way. They are both darkly, wickedly funny – not an immediate descriptor you would use for his films.

Kids stuff: How child actors are helping Hindi cinema grow

Express News Service
Alitle girl takes a last look at the house she grew up in. Another confesses to murder. A boy breaks down before his obsessive, hard-handed father.
A son snaps at his mother in a cramped chawl. And a young boy keeps his chin up in the toughest of spots. These are just some of my favourite images from Hindi cinema of the last one year or so. Incredibly, they all feature actors below the age of 16.
A bunch of talented child and teen actors are gradually taking over Bollywood. I’ve chosen a few — Ananya Dwivedi (Gulabo Sitabo), Inayat Verma (Ajeeb Daastaans, Ludo), Aakshath Das (Mersal, Serious Men), Sachin Chaudhary (Bombay Begums, Pagglait), Lydian Nadhaswaram (Atkan Chatkan) — but the list is huge. If you grew up in the 90s, you will remember Omkar Kapoor, Kunal Keemu, Sana Saeed and others as the popular child stars of the day.
