Kazuyoshi Miura: 'King Kazu' is a living legend & more than just a gimmick

It has become an annual tradition. Every January, Japanese living legend Kazuyoshi Miura signs a new one-year contract to extend his career as the world’s oldest professional footballer.
2021 has been no exception and ‘King Kazu’ penned a fresh deal with Yokohama FC, the club he joined in 2005. Miura was in his late thirties then, a time when most players are either already retired or winding down their career. But he has gone on for another 16 years and counting.

Macarthur fans get the chance to be part of something special

Tom Smithies

That’s the thing about history – you don’t often realise you’re part of it until it’s officially history.
The 10,500 Western Sydney fans who turned up to Parramatta Stadium on October 6 2012 knew they were witnessing the start of something… but only eight months later did they realise just what a spectacular story they had been part of from the very beginning.
Western Sydney won the Premier’s Plate in that first campaign, reached the Grand Final and generally helped to create an incredible buzz around the A-League. Which is why it’s so fitting that they host the new kids on the block in Macarthur FC’s own first foray into competitive football on Wednesday night.

Smithies' 15 at 15: The A-League's most striking moments

2005-06: The day they threw open the gates on the A-League’s opening weekend
Frank Lowy had pleaded for fans to back the new A-League, and some 70,000 across the country heeded the call on its opening weekend in August 2005.
In fact it was more, but they stopped counting when the gates at Sydney Football Stadium were thrown open, so long were the queues as Sydney FC hosted Melbourne Victory, and marquees Dwight Yorke and Archie Thompson got on the scoresheet.
2006-07: Victory v Sydney draw 90k over two games
Getting almost 40,000 to what was then called Telstra Dome in Round 2 was good enough, but weeks later in early December more than 50,000 fans packed in for the rematch.

A frenetic start, a handful of new venues and a last-minute TV deal – the A-League is in transition, but is it enough to save the competition?
“I think that if there’s been an issue with the league, it’s been with a collection of owners who haven’t been able to sell to a fanbase that they’re there for the good of the game,” says Fox Sports commentator and recent PhD graduate, Dr Andy Harper, on the eve of the 2020-21 A-League campaign.

The Japanese imports set to break new ground in 2020/21

A record-breaking five Japanese imports are set to grace clubs around the A-League, as the the 2020/21 campaign draws ever closer.
Western United defender Tomoki Imai is joined by recent Brisbane Roar signings Masato Kudo and Riku Danzaki, exciting Melbourne City forward Naoki Tsubaki and Perth Glory recruit Kosuke Ota in making up the five Japanese players signed to A-League clubs to date.
Of the 13 Japanese players (including Imai but not including the league's four new imports) to have played in the A-League throughout the years, there have never been five to feature in the same season, however three competed in both the 2005/06 and 2012/13 campaigns.
