potential general election. meanwhile, president biden had this to say about his likely opponent. >> have you seen donald trump's mugshot to get? >> i did see it on television. >> what did you think? >> handsome guy. wonderful guy. >> joining me now, retired marine corps lieutenant colonel amy mcgrath, she also ran for senate in kentucky against mitch mcconnell. and the cofounder of the lincoln project, he worked on a number of republican campaigns. reid, these numbers that trump has among republicans remain strong, but do you think this puts the party in a bind because their voters are demanding a candidate who keeps losing to independents? >> look, as i said before on the 11th hour with you, simone, they made a deal with the devil and now they're paying for it. the devil always comes for his do. you showed those numbers from reuters are from a poll last month that showed that 37% of independents are more likely to vote for joe biden because of this. only 8% said they're more
versus what trump is accused of was maybe 10%. certainly he obstructed justice. certainly he abused power. certainly nixon did other things, but to compare that to what trump is very credibly accused of, fomenting an insurrection, could have stolen this presidency on january six and brought down our democracy, stealing voting rights of georgia. that's what we have been hearing about this week. stealing classified documents with nuclear secrets and secret war plans and maybe giving them to people who should not have had them, not only visiting reporters but maybe hostile powers. we don't know that yet. that speculation. these are things that put anything that nixon did in the shade because the net result of all of this would be, if trump had succeeded with some of these things, we would be living in a dictatorship right now, simone. i am not sure that you and i
opportunity, and i would love -- if you could tell us how you feel about these raise your hand questions. >> well, i hate those razor-thin questions. that may be the only thing that i agree with, that they said that. i mean, simone, what i saw the lineup there, just looking at it, i thought wow, the republican party has quite an opportunity to appeal to younger people, especially because you look at their crowd there and it's diverse. you've got tim scott, you've got ramaswamy, you've got nikki haley, a variety of voices. and then they start talking and they want to take america into the past in a way that is completely anathema to young people. they're talking about climate change is a hoax, a national abortion ban, they don't even agree with things like the chips bill that would infuse america with more manufacturing, and are willing to pick on and bully transgender people, so everything that young people stand against, here's why it's important. because in 2020, the last presidential election, by one
thousands of people joined the march on washington for jobs, justice, and freedom. today people gathered on the national mall to say this is not a commemoration, but a continuation of that very fight. i am simone sanders townsend, and i have something to say. and i have something to say. this week, the world laid eyes on something we've never seen before. the mugshot of a former american president. former president donald j trump turned himself into fulton county jail on thursday. 's -- relating to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election in georgia. in addition to having his mugshot taken, his fingerprinted, he was issued an identification number. and he was released on a 200,000 dollar bond.

>> six out of eight, that's what i mean. and therefore it makes you question whether they did believe anything anything at all or do believe anything at all. they are terrified of trump. they're terrified, perhaps, of what he might have on them. they are certainly terrified of the voters who love trump. and i guess what i would finally say, simone, is that the founders of this country who were not perfect, their idea was that it would be like leading the, plow serving in congress, maybe run for president, then you go back to your farm. you don't have to run for president. if these people are willing to lower themselves and degrade themselves by saying, essentially, we will support our guy for our nomination, even if he's in prison next year. what kind of science fiction film is this? >> michael beschloss, you are a man that has seen so much. you know so much. and i really appreciate your insight tonight. thank you. >> thank you, simone.
