Study to boost the value of future rail network

MALAYSIA will embark on a detailed study this year to see how it can maximise economic and social returns should a decision be made to proceed with the building of a high speed rail (HSR) network in the country.
According to MyHSR Corporation Sdn Bhd (MyHSR), the special purpose company to spearhead the project on the Malaysian side, the study is expected to take up to six months.
If Malaysia decides to proceed with building a HSR network, it is possible to have as many as four new domestic HSR services, said MyHSR Corp chief executive Datuk Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal at a recent press briefing, following the lapse of a bilateral agreement signed with Singapore on Dec 13,2016 to have a cross border HSR service from Bandar Malaysia to Jurong East, Singapore. ....

COMMENT | As someone who was part of the Malaysian team of officials that worked on the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR) project for two years way back in 2015 – 2016, I felt a tinge of sadness when the two prime ministers announced the termination of the HSR Bilateral Agreement on Jan 1, 2021.
However, after listening to the
Astro Awani interview with Minister in Prime Minister s Department (Economy) Mustapa Mohamad and also the podcast of the statement by Singapore Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung, I realised that while the 2016 HSR Bilateral Agreement is definitely dead and buried, the same is not necessarily true of the project itself. ....

SINGAPORE: The plan was to connect Singapore and Kuala Lumpur - two metropolitan cities in Southeast Asia - by a high-speed rail, revving both economies and propelling each to become a formidable force in the region.
However, this was not to be after the KL-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) project was terminated on New Year’s Day after the agreement to construct it lapsed on Dec 31, 2020. ....

Hong Kong-Singapore travel bubble bursts, world must wait longer for 1st quarantine-free lane

Hong Kong-Singapore travel bubble bursts, world must wait longer for 1st quarantine-free lane

How much risk will a vital hub of global commerce entertain to open an important chunk of the economy? None, appears to be the answer, judging by the suspension of the Hong Kong-Singapore travel bubble on the eve of its debut.
The two finance and transport centers hit pause on what would have been the world’s first quarantine-free bubble Saturday evening, citing a spike in Covid-19 cases in Hong Kong. After seeming to suppress the disease, the city witnessed a jump in infections last week, prompting new social curbs. Singapore says the travel lane will be reviewed in two weeks. ....

The optimism on display just two months ago when Singapore Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung pledged to reopen the city-state and its tourism-reliant economy has taken a beating after a possible local coronavirus case was found aboard one of Royal Caribbean Cruise’s ships.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the 1,680 passengers on
Quantum of the Seas  enjoying day three of a four-day cruise to nowhere and 1,148 crew were alerted to an announcement that a suspected case of Covid-19 had been discovered, the voyage was being cut short and everyone should remain in their staterooms. ....
