OPINION: Right place for national memorial, whatever certain type of person says

The Westminster Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre, approved last week, will be an invaluable resource for Holocaust education for generations to come. The overwhelming majority of UK Holocaust survivors and educators celebrated the government’s announcement and I was delighted for them.
Sir Mick Davis
There has been vociferous opposition from some quarters and, sadly, it seems this will continue. I have rebutted their arguments previously and, given the decision just handed down, ordinarily I would follow the wisdom of the Arabic proverb: “the dog barks, but the caravan moves on”.  But the narrative and language used by some of the memorial’s opponents are so egregious that they cannot be allowed to stand.

World Jewish Relief 'gives us belief in our future'

Prince Charles speaking at a WJR event
It would, said retired Ukrainian teacher Lidia, be impossible to survive without World Jewish Relief (WJR). It was a message echoed repeatedly during an emotional virtual event held by the charity
.
Hosted by BBC journalist Emily Maitlis, the evening, for which more than 1,000 people registered, featured a heartfelt message from the charity’s patron, Prince Charles, a discussion with the outgoing chair, Dan Rosenfield – now Chief of Staff in Downing Street – and, courtesy of a longstanding university friendship with Rosenfield, a special one-off message and performance from Coldplay singer-songwriter, Chris Martin.
As WJR’s chief executive Paul Anticoni made clear, its work spans 18 countries with 66 separate partner organisations. Last year, the charity provided services to 73,000 people.

National Holocaust Memorial centre to be free 'in perpetuity', minister vows

The national Holocaust memorial centre in Westminster will be free “in perpetuity” to visitors when it opens, the Communities Secretary has announced.
Robert Jenrick said the decision would put the Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre, due to be built in Victoria Tower Gardens next to Parliament, on the same footing as the UK’s most significant museums and monuments.
The Government said the centre, scheduled to open in 2024, will be the focal point for national remembrance of the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered in the Holocaust and all other victims of Nazi persecution, along with providing a place for reflection on “subsequent genocides”.

The Holocaust and its impact has reverberated through the past decades, and has lessons for us today.
Twenty-one years ago, in January 2000, the senior leaders of 46 countries met in Stockholm to discuss Holocaust education and remembrance.
They signed the Stockholm Declaration, which became the cornerstone for remembering the Holocaust around the world.
The declaration said that “the Holocaust shook the foundations of modern civilisation” and that it “must have a permanent place in our nation's collective memory”.
The then Prime Minister Tony Blair returned from Stockholm and set up Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK.
