The Tory offensive against freedom of speech

FREE speech and freedom of expression are under attack from the Conservative government.
Historically the left has been the champion of these rights against governments and states which have tried to constrain dissent through legislation and delegitimisation.
The Johnson government has already passed laws and is proposing new laws which will restrict freedom of expression.
This is a matter of concern for the whole trade union and labour movement. It is time to reaffirm the left’s tradition of defending freedom of speech and expression.
The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill is going through Parliament.
The Institute of Employment Rights has described the 300-page Bill as a “Trojan horse” within which a wide range of measures are proposed which directly threaten the rights to demonstrate.

Spycop who slept with four women while undercover admits his actions were wrong and inappropriate

AN UNDERCOVER officer who slept with four women while infiltrating protest groups admitted to a public inquiry today that his actions were wrong and inappropriate.
The ex-cop, who used the cover name Vince Miller during his deployment in the 1970s, conceded that had the women known his true identity they would not have had sex with him.
He did not use contraception with the women or consider the risk of pregnancy, the public inquiry into undercover policing heard.
Giving evidence, “Mr Miller” said he took responsibility for sleeping with his targets and admitted that his behaviour was “definitely wrong.”
The former officer is one of at least 20 spycops who deceived campaigners into sexual relationships while serving in secret police units that infiltrated more than 1,000 protest groups over 40 years. Four officers are known to have fathered children while undercover.

Woman deceived by spy cop sees relationship as rape, inquiry hears

Last modified on Tue 11 May 2021 00.10 EDT
An undercover police officer has been accused of lying to a public inquiry by a woman who said that he deceived her into a sexual relationship that she regards as rape.
The woman, known only as Madeleine, told the inquiry that the police spy, Vince Miller, deceived her into a sexual relationship that lasted a couple of months. He has claimed that they had a sexual encounter that lasted one night.
Madeleine said he started the relationship with her at a time when she was “fragile and vulnerable” after the end of an abusive marriage.

Spycop bosses knew officers were sleeping with targets but 'turned a blind eye,' inquiry hears

AN UNDERCOVER officer has admitted that his bosses were aware of spycops having sex with their targets but “turned a blind eye,” a public inquiry heard today.
The former cop, who used the cover name Graham Coates while infiltrating protest groups in the 1970s, said that managers were present when officers joked and made “gross” comments about having sexual relationships with female campaigners.
Coates, whose real name is restricted by an anonymity order, was speaking at the public inquiry into undercover policing today.
The probe, headed by retired judge Sir John Mitting, is investigating abuses by officers who served in two secret police units that infiltrated more than 1,000 protest groups over 40 years.

Met spied on Blair Peach partner for more than two decades, inquiry hears

First published on Thu 6 May 2021 09.10 EDT
Scotland Yard spied for more than two decades on the partner of an anti-racist protester who police accept was almost certainly killed by one of their officers at a demonstration, a public inquiry has been told.
Celia Stubbs campaigned for years to uncover the truth of how her boyfriend, Blair Peach, died at the demonstration. It was one of the most controversial cover-ups in modern policing history.
Documents disclosed by the public inquiry revealed how undercover officers working for a secret Metropolitan police unit monitored the progress of the campaign that she and other activists ran.

Met police spy led triple life infiltrating socialists and far right, inquiry hears

Last modified on Tue 4 May 2021 13.18 EDT
An undercover police officer led a triple life infiltrating a socialist group and a fascist group at the same time, according to documents disclosed to a public inquiry.
The spy, who adopted the fake name Peter Collins, was sent by his Scotland Yard bosses to infiltrate a leftwing group, the Workers Revolutionary Party (WRP), for three years, the inquiry heard.
During the deployment, members of the WRP persuaded him to infiltrate a violent far-right group, the National Front. Collins filed reports of his infiltration of both organisations to his police managers.
These reports, published by the public inquiry into undercover policing on Tuesday, are the first significant evidence that officers spied on the far right, although not in this case at the instigation of the police.

Undercover police officers spied on Peter Hain over 25 years

The inquiry, headed by former judge Sir John Mitting, has released to Hain 70 secret reports that detail how at least six undercover officers spied on him between 1969 and 1994 while he campaigned against apartheid and racism.
The surveillance included spying on private political meetings held at his parents’ home.
Hain, who went on to sit in the cabinet and authorise the deployment of undercover officers against terrorists, made a scathing attack on the “staggering scale” of the covert monitoring of peaceful protesters, calling it “reprehensible, pointless and a massive waste of police resources”.
The last of the secret reports, three years after he had been elected to parliament, contained a list of the national executive of an anti-racist campaign, the Anti-Nazi League, on which he sat.
