tonight, comedian dave chappelle is set to host "saturday night live." it comes as unconfirmed reports about backstage drama are swirling. namely, a boycott by "snl's" writers. we have more on how chappelle's past comments swirled tension over the gig. >> reporter: anticipation building at 30 rock, home of nbc and "saturday night live," where comedian dave chappelle is set to host "snl's" post election day episode this weekend. >> this is dave. he tells jokes for a living. he's also about to host "saturday night live" for the third time. >> reporter: but this time, questions about possible problems behind the scenes. chappelle's representatives pushing back on unconfirmed reports that "snl" writers were staging a boycott related to the comedian's previous comments about the trans community. telling cnn, we've seen nothing to support media reports of a writer's boycott.

he's one of a kind, in many ways. >> no one does. what do you think of this folks who had even more zingers at biden including the idea that things aren't going well. and whether one wants to agree with that or think is fair or not, "snl's" not writing jokes and punch lines for one-half of the country. they think it's a punch line that people understand that it's not going well. do you see that as an issue? and what about carville's advice? >> well, first of all, the big thing is the political environment. and the thing that's going to improve the political environment both for the white house and democrats is covid being in the rear-view mirror. so, if this summer we are endemic and kids are going back to school next year without masks on, people are less worried about getting sick, there's less, you know, influx into hospitals, then some of the other economic statistics i think can breathe a bit. you've had midterms that i think

i don't know how you see this. i attend to as a first amendment purist believe that you can say anything that you will own the consequences for. if you will take responsibility for what you say, first line of the nbc news standards, we are responsible for everything we report, on every medium, including social media. we're responsible. so i can report anything i will own. and if he's willing to own the criticism, okay. that's on you. you're free to say it. but how do you see it, pete? >> well, increasingly, comedians are more worried about their words, simply if they work for companies. of course, che is at start "saturday night live" and can be there. but i put comedians, my peers, in a different category. they are comedians and some of them will go for the most shocking thing they can and hope to profit from it. that's why, earlier, joshua, you said, i'm not sure who the critics are of simone biles or why they're doing this, and ana, you were both like, why would
okay right now, that people will say, okay, i understand, let's set you back and make sure that you are all right. and those kinds are the people you have to have around you. the fact that she has pulled out from the uneven bars and the vault makes total sense to me, given the conditions that she's having right now. vault, she had that near crash when she was in the finals before she withdrew, so not surprised she pulled out there. uneven bars has always been her weakest even on the four, and so that still gives her the floor routine and the balance beams. >> i'm sure you heard about "snl's" michael che who came under fire for some jokes that he posted on instagram, which comedians come up with jokes, they come up with jokes on every aspect of life. there are a few sacred cows in the world of comedy, but he got some flack for the things he posted about simone biles ahead of a stand-up show he's doing in new york this weekend.
