Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, who as district attorney hired Carlos Vega for his first job as a Philadelphia prosecutor, on Tuesday will endorse his former underling’s campaign to unseat current DA Larry Krasner in next week’s Democratic primary.
“That wouldn’t be wrong,” Rendell said late Monday night when asked if he is the main attraction at a Vega campaign event billed as a “major endorsement announcement.” The Vega campaign on Tuesday morning confirmed Rendell’s coming endorsement.

Mayoral Veto Kills Controversial Philadelphia Downzoning
The mayor, planning staff, and the Philadelphia Planning Commission agree. The Philadelphia City Council and residents of the wealthy neighborhood of Society Hill, not so much.

"Mayor Jim Kenney has once again vetoed a controversial zoning bill that sought to create a height ceiling in Philadelphia’s affluent Society Hill neighborhood," reports Ryan Briggs.
Planetizen picked up the news in September of legislation that the City Council would downzone the affluent neighborhood over the objections of planning staff and the Philadelphia Planning Commission. The legislation "would have limited development in the area to just 65 feet, or about six stories," according to Briggs.

City Council has unanimously passed zoning bills proposed by the Society Hill Civic Association that it believes are necessary for historic preservation. Critics say that historic preservation is a phony rationale from NIMBY-residents intent on excluding density and affordable housing from Society Hill. An op-ed published by PlanPhilly goes further by tossing off a reckless claim that we are “gaming the system” to keep housing accessible to only a white minority.
Can we just look at the facts?
There are the two bills:
First, as requested of all Registered Community Organizations city wide, the Civic Association produced a remapping of some parcels that made them more consistent with current usages and the recommendation of the Philadelphia Planning Commission to reduce “piano key” zoning of properties within the same block. This remapping was the result of extensive discussion and compromise. It was passed with the full support of the city’s Planning Commision.

Vision Zero, Philly’s Bold Plan to Eliminate Traffic Deaths, Needs Bolder Action
The city hasn’t been ambitious when it’s mattered.

Philly’s approach to Vision Zero needs bolder action. Illustration by Paul Garland
One word to sum up Philly’s Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic deaths by 2030? Ambitious. Even bike-loving Sweden — which pioneered the global safe-streets initiative in 1997 — has yet to meet its zero-traffic-deaths commitment. Things did start well here. In 2017, the city’s first year under Vision Zero, a decrease in crash fatalities made the impossible look … possible. But during 2018, the program’s second year, traffic deaths actually jumped by 17 percent, for an increase from 78 to 91, continuing a general upward trend in people killed by vehicles on Philly streets.

That’s it, the better part of a decade is in the books for PlanPhilly. Another year of reporting from City Hall and city streets, enduring interminable council meetings, translating governmental jargon, and giving you the news shaping growth in our city’s neighborhoods.
But to cap it all off, we wanted to try something a little different.
Three hundred sixty-four days of the year, we try our best to report on all different perspectives when it comes to urban planning and development. But in this magical moment of resolutions and good tidings, we want to give you some of our own unvarnished opinions about what’s working and what’s not.

Kasia Stein of Society Hill rides her bicycle on Spruce and Pine streets every day. She now rides in improved bike lanes, which came in response to years of advocacy following a fatal 2017 crash and another resulting in critical injury just weeks later.
The improvements included moving the bike lanes to the left side of the road to improve visibility and installing flexible delineator posts between the bike and traffic lanes at each intersection to slow left-turning vehicles. The city put in the new infrastructure between Front and 21st streets.
