He had already finished 84 flight sessions and there were only four more to be completed. After 50 hours of flying the trainees are allowed to fly alone, under supervision. Last Tuesday, 15 minutes after he took off from the China-bay base in Trincomalee in the Chinese built trainer aircraft bought in 2018, the 23-year-old lost contact. “He lost contact with the airbase and shortly afterwards he crash-landed close to a stream in Sooriyapura, Kantale,’’ a senior Air Force officer said.
By Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya An SLAF PT-6 Aircraft which left China Bay in Trincomalee, made a crash-landing in a paddy field near the Janaranjana Wewa, Sooriyapura in Kantale yesterday killing its pilot. Police said only the pilot was on board the craft at the time of crash-landing. Meanwhile, SLAF Spoekseman said the aircraft went missing from the radar screen last afternoon. It was reported that when the aircraft crashed, a group of farmers who were nearby had attempted to save the pilot. Police said the body of the pilot which was strapped to the seat of the aircraft, was removed to the Trincomalee Hospital.

The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) on Tuesday appointed a five-member Board of Inquiry to investigate the crash of a training aircraft which resulted in the death of a cadet pilot, Air Force Commander Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana said on Tuesday. The board made up of aeronautical, technical and medical experts is expected to submit an interim report within a week. The SLAF has temporarily grounded all PT-6 aircraft in the fleet until the interim report is prepared, Air Marshal Pathirana added. According to the SLAF, the PT-6 trainer aircraft from the No. 1 Flying Training Wing at China Bay crashed near the Janaranjana Tank in Sooriyapura, Kantale. It was flown by Officer Cadet Shalitha Amarakoon who was on a solo mission, departing China Bay Air Force Base at 1:05 p.m. and had lost radio contact with the control tower 10 minutes later. A Bell-212 helicopter with a search and rescue team had been scrambled to locate the missing aircraft, the Air Force said.

Dec 15, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has announced that a PT6 trainer aircraft belonging to the No. 1 Flying Training Wing at SLAF Academy China Bay has crashed into a canal near the Janaranjana Wewa in Sooriyapura, Kantale. The pilot who was trapped inside the craft has died, the police said. The crash site is approximately 14 nautical miles away from SLAF Academy China Bay and the pilot of the aircraft was a trainee Officer Cadet who was on a solo training mission. “The aircraft which took off from the China Bay airfield at around 1305 Hrs today had lost radio communication with the air traffic control tower at China Bay at approximately 1315 Hrs before being reported to have crashed,” SLAF said.
