An Inscrutable Monarch, Endlessly Scrutinized Onstage and Onscreen

Queen Elizabeth II was portrayed in plays and highbrow films, in made-for-TV movies and broad comedies and, of course, in “The Crown.” Many sought to answer the question: What was she like?

Everyone has a memory of seeing Princess Diana in her wedding dress. The specifics may be fuzzy, but we all have an idea in our head of what that particular gown meant. It’s soft, extravagant, and utterly unique. The women of Buckingham Palace truly take center stage in the fourth season of Netflix’s
The Crown, and Emmy-winning costume designer Amy Roberts gets the chance of a lifetime to introduce Diana to the world.
Diana was one of the most photographed women in history, so everyone has a favorite look or outfit. The paparazzi made sure that we saw everything that Diana was wearing at all times. Roberts couldn’t let that pressure get to her, however.

Prince Philip had a rich Hollywood history. Here's how he was depicted in film and TV | Movies

‘The Queen’: James Cromwell
James Cromwell, an American, played Philip opposite Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II, a performance that won her an Oscar in 2007. The New York Times said Cromwell played Philip as a “dim bulb,” one of a cast of secondary characters who “prove especially crucial because it’s through their dealings with the queen, their awe and boobishness ..., that we start to get a handle on her.” Cromwell was nominated for an Oscar in 1995 for “Babe”; he starred in HBO’s “Six Feet Under” and the movie “L.A. Confidential,” to name only a few of his many credits.

Prince Philip: Irascible, possibly unfaithful – and, since The Crown, so incredibly glamorous

Millions of Netflix viewers will, on hearing of the
duke of Edinburgh’s death, think first of the character played by Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies in The Crown. That version is irascible, discontented, dynamic, potentially unfaithful and consistently irreverent.
Worse was written about Queen Elizabeth’s consort during his life. Any perusal of the euphemisms thrown at Prince Philip in largely positive obituaries will confirm he was seen as, to employ one more evasion, a complex character.
The New York Times called him abrasive. Reuters went with “blunt-speaking”. The Wall Street Journal favoured “sometimes outspoken”. We needed only “didn’t suffer fools gladly” to complete the Prince Philip bingo card. Oh, hang on. The Daily Telegraph has just obliged. Bingo!

Netflix's televised revolution began in earnest in February 2013, when the machiavellian political schemer Frank Underwood looked straight into the camera and casually snapped a dog’s neck. It was the first episode of
House of Cards – a $100 million TV series that would only be available on the Internet.
The show represented a huge risk for the streaming service as it sought to make the leap from tech start-up to entertainment industry goliath.
Five years on and the gamble has paid off. Netflix was a major winner at the Emmys, its haul of 23 awards attesting to its power-player status. And while
