Apr. 28—Disney created "Raya and the Last Dragon," its first animated film with a Southeast Asian heroine, with help from an anthropologist in Turlock.
Associate Professor Steve Arounsack consulted on the production over about two years, while continuing to teach at California State University, Stanislaus.
Arounsack helped to assure that Raya's fictional story was true to the region that inspired it. He was born in Laos himself and fled at 4 with his refugee family in 1980, eventually coming to Modesto. He has taught at Stan State since 2005, often helping students from various immigrant backgrounds tell their own stories.

Raya and the Last Dragon takes place in the separated lands of the fictional realm of Kumandra: Heart, Tail, Spine, Talon, and Fang. Raya, our young heroine, is searching for Sisu, the last dragon of Kumandra, in order to unite the disparate nations. Human discord tore them apart, and feeds the amorphous evil known as the Druun, a rolling black wave that turns every person and animal into stone. A star-studded cast brings this tale to life, including Kelly Marie Tran as Raya, Awkafina as the dragon Sisu, Daniel Dae Kim as Chief Benja, Gemma Chan as Namaari, and a whole host of others.

Raya and the Last Dragon will be arriving on all major digital platforms beginning April 2, and on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD beginning May 18! The home release includes Disney’s new animated short “Us Again.” The animated feature is currently playing in select theaters. The arrival of
Raya and the Last Dragon, Disney’s latest animated movie, brings cause for celebration among many in Asian and Asian-American communities. The film is a landmark moment for Southeast Asian representation in Hollywood: Raya is Disney’s first Southeast Asian princess, and is voiced by Kelly Marie Tran, the first Southeast Asian actor to lead an animated feature from the studio. Set in the fantasy land of Kumandra, which Disney has said is inspired by the cultures of Southeast Asia, the story follows the quest of the eponymous heroine as she searches for the fabled dragon Sisu in order to restore a broken world. The film—which is available on Disney+ with Premier Access and in select theaters on March 5— was co-written by Vietnamese-American screenwriter Qui Nguyen and Malaysian-American screenwriter Adele Lim, the latter of whom is best known for co-writing
