Every Book On The 2021 Women's Prize Shortlist Is A Must Read

If you’ve been wondering what your next read should be, or perhaps you’re planning your summer reading list, then the 2021 Women’s Prize Shortlist has you covered.
The six novels up for the award this year are certainly a mixed bag, meaning there’s something for every bookworm. The Women’s Prize was first introduced in 1996 to counter the Booker Prize of 1991 when no female authors made the shortlist.
This year is the first since 2005 that the prize has shortlisted only first-time nominees and the winner, who stands to receive €35,000, will be announced on July 7.
These six novels stand to be the biggest books of the summer, so we suggest you get reading!

The duo will also executive produce alongside Issa Rae and Stephanie Allain.
HBO has found the writers for its potential series based on Brit Bennett's novel
The Vanishing Half.
Aziza Barnes and Jeremy O. Harris will adapt the best seller and serve as executive producers of the project. They'll also serve as executive producers;
Insecure star and co-creator Issa Rae and Oscars producer Stephanie Allain are also EPs.
The Vanishing Half, which became an instant best seller upon its publication in June 2020, centers on identical twin sisters who run away from their small, southern Black community at age 16. As adults, it’s not just the shape of their daily lives that is different, it’s everything: their families, their communities, the essence of who they are. Ten years later, they are living completely separate lives, far from the close-knit sisters they once were — and with many secrets that divide them further. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined.

"The Vanishing Half" By Brit Bennett - The People's Friend

Did you catch Editor, Angela and Production Ed, Judey, discussing Burns, his poetry and his legacy on Facebook Live?  It makes interesting listening – did you know the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum is the second-most-visited writer’s museum in the UK (after Shakespeare’s)?
One of his poems mentioned in the broadcast is “To A Louse”, which features the lines:
O wad some Pow’r the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!
And it occurred to me that’s what’s at the heart of  “The Vanishing Half”, by Brit Bennett — how others see us, and also how we see ourselves.

Hamnet, by Maggie O'Farrell
It's summer, and a plague is sweeping the country. Maggie O'Farrell's novel transports the reader back to 1596, and to Shakespeare's family — in particular his
wild and mystical wife Agnes (as she is named here) and his ill-fated son Hamnet — in the years preceding the play that took his name. Motherhood and scenes of pastoral life are described in exquisite detail.
Real Life, by Brandon Taylor
On the face of it, Real Life is a campus novel in the tradition of The Secret History or Normal People. But Taylor's story, which follows Wallace — a gay, black biochemistry student transplanted from his home in Alabama to a university in the Midwest — as he struggles amid wealth and white privilege, puts class, race and sexuality under forensic scrutiny.

No shortage of escapes in a year stuck at home
by Ally Kutz
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett Fiction, Historical Fiction // Riverhead Books
The year 2020 has been…interesting, to say the least. With a pandemic bringing our lives to a complete halt followed by a new normal of masks, social distancing, and self-quarantining, many were left feeling stuck while staying at home. Luckily, 2020 also brought with it an astounding number of great books to help pass the time in isolation and escape to new worlds. Some of the best took us to the Deep South and Los Angeles; to a small mountain mining town in 1950s Mexico; to a remote island off the coast of Ireland; to the mysterious world between living and dying; and into the author's very mind
