On Tuesday, the crew of Austin Fire Department Engine 38 responded to a 911 call reporting that a squirrel had gotten its head stuck in the knothole of a tree and had the lower half of its body hanging out, fire officials said. The caller didn’t know how long the squirrel had been there. Crews took video of Austin firefighters Steven Slaughter and Shane Burton working to free the squirrel. After two minutes, the rodent was dislodged and on its way. “We assume none the worse for wear since he didn’t stick around to offer so much as a ‘thank you,’” Austin Fire Department spokeswoman Michelle Tanzola said.
