NEW YORK, May 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ A research team has designed a molecule with potential to interfere in a new way with altered proteins that cause abnormal growth in 35 percent of pancreatic cancers.
Published online in
Nature Communications on May 11, a new study found that a molecule called a monobody clings to cancer-causing versions of the KRAS protein and keeps them from transmitting their signals. Changes in the DNA of the
KRAS gene – which encodes a molecular switch that toggles between active and inactive states to regulate growth – cause the related protein to become stuck in the on mode. Cells with such mutations continually multiply and give rise to cancer. ....

Remembering Waterloo Region's first COVID-19 victim a year after his death

A typical family gathering to celebrate Chinese New Year turned out to be the last cherished memory of John Tsai. 
The 41 year-old died a few weeks later from COVID-19, marking Waterloo Region’s first victim of the deadly disease.
Steven Tsai recalled that family meal at Crystal Palace in Uptown Waterloo. Amid the bustle and laughter throughout the Chinese restaurant, Steven remembers his brother breaking the news to his family that Kobe Bryant and his daughter had died that day.
“I was so shocked to hear two people so young being taken away way too soon,” Steven said. “I remember thinking how devastating it must have been for Kobe s wife, children & family to have happen, it was truly saddening.” ....

A year of pandemic: Here's what's changed in Waterloo Region since the first case of COVID-19

One year has passed since Region of Waterloo Public Health reported the first case of COVID-19.
Officials said the woman, who was in her 50s, started experiencing mild symptoms on March 1, 2020. She returned to the area from Italy on March 3, 2020 and used private transportation to travel from Toronto s Pearson International Airport to Grand River Hospital. She was discharged on March 4.
Since that first case a year ago, nearly 11,000 people in the region have tested positive for the disease.
Students were sent home, businesses closed their doors and people wore masks to protect themselves and others from the spread of the disease. ....
