New Psychiatric Center for People Experiencing Homelessness Opens in Mission District

"The Hummingbird model is a proven concept that can make a real difference in the crisis on our streets, and we need many more of them," District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman said in a statement.
The new location will further use "the Hummingbird model" in its care, which includes referrals to primary care, transportation to medical appointments, one-on-one counseling services, discharge planning and employment opportunities.
Positive Resource Center/Baker Places worked with the city to operate the original facility at General Hospital. Brett Andrews, CEO of the organization, says that he's proud to build on the service further.
"We provide a proven, cost-effective alternative to emergency room care," he said. "Our model enables people in crisis to de-escalate and stabilize in a safe, home-like environment, and then connect with additional services, if they choose to."

SF Mayor Breed Proposes New Team to Help Homeless Residents

Breed's proposed budget for 2021-2023, which she will submit to the Board of Supervisors on June 1, will include $9.6 million for five SWRT teams over two years.
If the funding is approved, which could happen at the end of July, the SWRT will deploy at least one team by January 2022, and build five teams by April 2022.
"Many calls to 911 or 311 about someone who appears to need help on our streets don't require an armed police response, and often the services and care people need would be best provided by a paramedic or outreach worker instead of a police officer," Breed said.

There's a new approach to police response to mental health emergencies. Taking the police out of it
Updated 8:24 PM ET, Fri April 2, 2021
(CNN)It's a sunny afternoon in San Francisco, and an agitated woman is screaming in the middle of the street, urgently pleading for help rescuing her daughter and granddaughter from a locked building on the corner of a busy intersection. She's stopping traffic; saying she's convinced they are going to die.
Behavioral health clinician Shari Lachin sees her and within seconds approaches the woman in distress, immediately engaging with her and attempting to deescalate the situation.

Oakland considers responding to some 911 calls with crisis response unit run out of fire department

The goal is to hire peer counselors and EMTs from the neighborhoods that they would serve. Some would be formerly incarcerated and unhoused people, who truly understand the situations many people in crisis are calling about. A typical salary would be $70,000 plus benefits.
