Winter wonderlands: Where to see the best scenery

Discover Taranaki’s Surf Highway 45
Keep a snowcapped Mt Taranaki on your left on a journey from New Plymouth to Hawera, and you can’t go wrong. Hopefully, the maunga’s perfect volcanic peak will be cloud-free as you negotiate Taranaki’s Surf Highway, taking time to detour down side roads to the skeletal remains of the SS Gairloch shipwreck just south of Ōakura, or the Cape Egmont Lighthouse at Pungarehu on Taranaki’s western-most point. Look forward to brisk westerlies and a winter Tasman swell rolling in all the way from Australia.
Don’t miss
Two of regional New Zealand’s best galleries and museums, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth, and the Tawhiti Museum in Hāwera.

My husband Lee and I have just passed a major milestone: 500 nights in the "Hiace Hilton", the little campervan we kitted out in 2011. Before that, we tented out of the back of a Nissan Bluebird. The last two decades have left us hopelessly addicted to camping the Kiwi way. I certainly never envisaged this during my childhood holidays relegated to a sandfly-infested awning at Nelson Lakes.

Suburb spotlight: Why you should visit Oakura, Taranaki

Further along, Holy Guacamole owners Isaac Drought and Cathi Strebinger whip up delicious burritos and beef taco bowls from their mobile caravan kitchen.

The Holy Guacamole food truck is a popular spot in summer.
In the township, Lemonwood Eatery owner Barbara Olsen-Henderson offers a fine range of award-winning vegan mince pies from her vegan cafe. Alongside, the tried and true Butlers Reef serves up consistent quality pub grub. Opposite, High Tide Cafe offers reviving espresso coffees and pastries.
Where to drink: A cold Three Sisters local craft beer on a hot day goes down well at Butlers Reef Hotel on the main thoroughfare, or overlooking the beach from Black Sand Pizzeria.

When we launched our quest to find New Zealand's best beach, we gave readers the opportunity to vote for their favourite summer spots. This week we've been profiling your top 10. To spice things up, we asked the Herald Travel team to come up with three wildcards. Keep your votes rolling in (scroll down to the form at the bottom). We'll announce the winner in the Herald on Sunday on January 31.
Herald Travel editor Stephanie Holmes admits it was impossible to include every beach Kiwis know and love in our shortlist.

Summer is bliss. Or "Bliss", if your coming-of-age memory is Th'Dudes' gig at the Soundshell.
It's the rosy beginning, burnt-orange middle and fading end of the golden weather, when life is a beach, a surf break, lakeshore, swimming hole, whitewater raft-ride, sit-down or stand-up paddle bay; when New Zealand becomes a country of sails.
Aotearoa has 15,000km of coastline, which means that each of us gets 3 metres to find a tree, spread out a towel and moor a gently defrosting chilly bin.

How many of New Zealand's big roadside objects have you passed? Sarah Pollok makes a big deal out of these local landmarks
When it comes to celebrating our love of something, it seems we Kiwis love building a big old sculpture of it. So, if seeing an enormous avocado or towering takahe, gigantic carrot or huge human hand has been on your bucket list, you're in the right country. Sometimes wonderful, often weird, here are some of New Zealand's quirkiest landmarks.
Ohakune's Big Carrot
As it turns out, the roots of this beloved landmark were commercial, with the giant carrot created for an ANZ TV commercial in the 80s. Done with filming and unsure what to do with a 7.5-meter-tall vegetable, the producers donated it to the town of Ohakune, where it was embraced as the city's mascot, beloved by tourists and locals alike.
