Much improvement expected in days ahead after brutal winter weather

SHREVEPORT, La. - The end is in sight. We saw more melting on Thursday, but unfortunately that slushy mix refroze overnight. The good news is we’re expecting more melting on Friday. The KTBS MEGA 3 StormTeam Yellow Weather Alert is in effect for Friday.
It's been a week to remember and one many would like to forget. The struggle is real for people stuck in the ice and snow. If you weren't one of them, consider yourself lucky.
Once again, stay off the roads. It's not safe and not worth the risk. Even with the daily melting, the precipitation that fell earlier this week remains packed down in some places, creating a dangerous, thick sheet of ice.

Over 15K SWPECO customers without power

Bienville Parish 310
Southwestern Electric Power Company workers and contractors continue to restore power to approximately 19,000 customers without service following a winter storm that brought freezing rain, ice, sleet and snow to the ArkLaTex.
Ice and snow brought down multiple trees and wires, particularly in the hardest-hit areas of Central Louisiana. Customers are reminded to stay away from downed lines and keep children and pets away as well. Report downed lines immediately to SWEPCO at 1-888-218-3919.
“Restoration work in our hardest-hit areas of DeSoto, Natchitoches and Sabine parishes has been slow going due to the ice and snow on the roads, but rising temperatures today and tomorrow will improve road conditions enabling us to speed up work,” said Drew Seidel, SWEPCO vice president of Region Distribution Operations. “We appreciate the continued patience of customers as SWEPCO employees and contractors work as safely and quickly as possible to get their lights on.”

"Unprecedented" rolling blackouts aimed at preventing massive outage in ArkLaTex

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Historic cold putting historic stress on the power grid forced SWEPCO to enact rolling blackouts for the second day in a row.
"During these extreme temperatures, that demand has been high enough it's exceeded the system's capability to deliver. So we've had to lower that demand," SWEPCO spokesman Peter Main says.
SWEPCO deliberately put sections of customers in the dark for a couple of hours or so, then rolled on to another section to force demand on the power grid down. The ArkLaTex area served by SWEPCO is part of the Southwest Power Pool, which is made up from all or parts of 14 states in the middle of the country.

Like most of the ArkLaTex, south Shreveport was frozen solid early Wednesday. There have been numerous reports of frozen pipes there.
Freezing rain began in Ruston early Wednesday, adding to already slick roads. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and Louisiana State Police have closed I-20 eastbound from the Industrial Drive exit to the Goodwill Road exit.

Further east in Bienville, Claiborne, and Lincoln parishes, more minor slide-offs were reported overnight but no major crashes or collisions. Most of the power outages from Tuesday have been restored, according to Entergy Louisiana.
