A powerful winter storm that dumped more than 2 feet of snow within 24 hours in the mountains surrounding the Las Vegas valley created some dangerous conditions, including an avalanche at Lee Canyon.
The U.S. Forest Service describes it as “a race against the clock” -- repairing communities in the Spring Mountains after the August storm and before winter and wet weather that could add time to the process.
After being closed since mid-August because of severe storm damage, the Nevada Department of Transportation announced that State Route 156 to Lee Canyon will reopen Thursday evening and the other main roads will be open within a few weeks.
An 856-foot section of Kyle Canyon Road was completely washed out near the Rainbow Canyon area when a series of storms caused massive flooding on Aug. 21. It was one of 43 sections of road damaged by storms associated with Tropical Storm Hilary.
