阿富汗最早的居民是吐火羅人，這是西方印歐民族的一支，先後受到塞種人、波斯人、希臘人統治，6世紀之後陸續突厥化，7世紀後則伊斯蘭化，逐漸成為今天種族混雜、主要信奉伊斯蘭教的現況。
今天的阿富汗人有40％為普希圖人，被人類學歸類為伊朗語支的雅利安民族，但也有部分人群之家譜可追溯到東地中海閃族語系，可能是阿拉伯帝國統治時代進入的阿拉伯人後裔；此外有27％人口為亦屬於伊朗語支的塔吉克人（中國新疆、塔吉克兩國都有塔吉克人）；9％為蒙古人後裔的哈扎拉人、9％烏茲別克人、3％土庫曼人（即突厥人）等。由此可見阿富汗種族複雜之情況，但此亦成為阿富汗政治上充滿部族長老影響，及部族武裝強過中央政府軍對地方控制力的去中央化趨勢。倘能善加利用此點，也是對抗塔利班的利器。
