Covid-19 vax safe for kids: Galvez

PFIZER FOR KIDS. The Air Hongkong flight carrying 780,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine for children lands at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City on Friday (Feb. 4, 2022). Vaccine czar, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., said the rollout of the vaccination program for five- to 11-year-olds would push through on February 7. (PNA photo by Robert Oswald P. Alfiler) MANILA - National Task Force Against Covid-19 chief implementer, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., has assured that the reformulated vaccine against the coronavirus disease 2019 is safe for children, saying the rollout of the vaccination program for five- to 11-year-olds would push through on February 7. "This is safe and has been studied by scientists across the globe," Galvez, who is also vaccine czar, said during the arrival of 780,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine for children at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Friday night. He said with the arrival of the government-procured reformulated vaccine, he could already see families going out together and kids playing around freely. "We are very confident that many people will support the government in the vaccination rollout," he said, adding that this is necessary as the nation moves forward to the "new normal". Galvez noted that 167,000 children have been registered to take part in the vaccination of minors set on Monday. "Cebu, Iloilo, and Bacolod are very eager to participate," he said. The Philippine Pediatric Society also supports the country's vaccination efforts, he added. "I urge the parents to register their children so that we could give them protection against Covid-19," Galvez said. Meanwhile, US Embassy Charge d'Affaires Heather Variava likewise vouched for the vaccine, saying it is "very safe and effective" and almost six million kids in the United States have been inoculated. The vaccine, she said, is essential so that kids could socialize, play, and experience face-to-face learning again. Based on the Philippines' Covid-19 vaccination dashboard, a total of 127,617,088 doses have been administered as of February 2. (PNA) }

Pharma companies, private clinics boost NCR vax rollout

Alfiler) MANILA - The government will tap seven pharmaceutical stores and private clinics in the National Capital Region (NCR) to expand the Covid-19 booster vaccination program. The initiative will address the shortage of vaccinators as the government targets at least 90 million for full vaccination by mid-year. Select Metro Manila branches of Mercury Drug, Watsons, The Generics Pharmacy, Generika, South Star Drug, QualiMed, and Healthway will begin administering booster doses on January 21 and will prioritize economic front-liners of the private sector. "This strategy is now being practiced in the US and globally, the use of big pharmacies and private sector clinics and the use of our pharmacist as vaccinator," National Task Force Against Covid-19 chief implementer, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., said during the taped public address of President Rodrigo Duterte aired late Monday night. The rollout will expand to other cities outside NCR and to other regions based on readiness and safety inspections, Galvez added. "This is our way forward to hand over the responsibility of the vaccination from the national government to local government units and the private sector in preparation for the future commercialization of the vaccine," Galvez said. The Philippines has so far administered 119,746,232 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine nationwide, with 59,031,437 doses used as first shots, 55,583,592 as second shots, and 5,131,203 as booster or additional shots. Nearly 7M aged 12-17 already fully vaccinated

(File photo) MANILA - The inoculation of minors aged 12 to 17 years is on track with nearly seven million already with complete doses against Covid-19. National Task Force Against Covid-19 chief implementer, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., reported on Monday that 54 percent of the target younger population, or a total of 6,789,182, have acquired protection against severe symptoms through Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. "Sa assessment po namin na kung magtuloy-tuloy po ang output natin, kaya po nating matapos ang pagbabakuna ng kabataang edad 12 hanggang 17 anyos by end of March at makapagsimula po ng boosters by April kapag pinayagan na po tayo ng mga expert (Our assessment showed that if we could continue our output, we can finish the vaccination of children 12 to 17 years old by the end of March and we can start giving booster shots by April, if the experts allow us)," Galvez said during the pre-recorded Talk to the People of President Rodrigo Duterte aired late Monday night. The government also eyes to inoculate about 15.5 million in the 5 to 11 age bracket. Galvez said some 780,000 lower-dosed Pfizer vaccines for the youngest age group so far are expected to arrive by end of January, followed by 1,632,000 doses in February. The government has also ordered 10 to 15 million doses for the second doses of the 5-11 age group. "Other orders will be in tranches considering this is a different formulation intended for the age group 11 years and below. Puwede po natin pong gamitin 'to sa (We can also use this for) zero to four years old," Galvez added. He said Sinovac Biotech Ltd. has applied for an emergency use authorization for 3 to 17-year-olds. (PNA) }

PH secures 210M vax shots with latest Moderna shipment

(PNA photo by Avito Dalan) MANILA - The Philippines on Wednesday night hit over 210 million in secured vaccine doses since the pandemic started as it receive yet another batch of Moderna jabs procured by the private sector. National Task Force Against Covid-19 consultant, Lt. Col. Francel Margareth Taborlupa together with other officials from the government welcomed the arrival of 1,230,800 doses of Moderna jabs, which she said would greatly contribute to the country's target of vaccinating 54 million people. The latest shipment will be used for first and second doses, as well as for booster shots, the official added. Data from the Department of Health showed that over 60 million doses of vaccines were delivered to the Philippines in December 2021 alone, with more donations and procured doses expected to arrive before 2021 ends. "It's going to boost the vaccination effort of the Philippine government. It will really help us attain our target of vaccinating 54 million in order to attain population protection," Taborlupa said during the arrival ceremony at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1. The official noted that the government is also aiming to vaccinate at least 77 million people before the 2022 election and kickoff the inoculation drive for five to 11 years old by mid-January. With enough jabs in the country's stockpile, Taborlupa reiterated the government's appeal on all unvaccinated to get jabbed as soon as possible, especially now with the entry of the Omicron variant. "It's almost the end of the year so we'd like to thank everyone who has been with us in our effort to vaccinate and we wish everyone a Happy New Year but siyempre po wag isantabi ang Omicron virus (please refrain from ignoring the threat of the Omicron variant)," she said. The official said it's "alarming" that in just a couple of days, the positivity rate had been increasing. "Ibig sabihin mayroong effect 'yong paglabas natin (It means the gesture of people going out has still an effect) that's why we encourage everyone to still be very protected, get vaccinated," she said. Pfizer jabs for 5- to 11-year olds to arrive January

ARRIVAL OF PFIZER DOSES. National Task Force Against Covid-19 Special Adviser Dr. Teodoro Herbosa (left) with US Embassy in the Philippines Officeof International NarcoticsandLaw Enforcement Affairs Director Kelia Cummins during the arrival of 871,650 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 on Thursday (Dec. 23, 2021). Herbosa said while the emergency use authorization for the use of the Pfizer vaccine for children aged five to 11 years old has been issued by the Food and Drug Administration, the actual doses to be used are expected to arrive by January 2022. (PNA photo by Avito C. Dalan) MANILA - Doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech (Pfizer) vaccine for those aged five to 11 years old are expected to arrive by January next year. National Task Force Against Covid-19 Special Adviser Dr. Teodoro Herbosa said while the emergency use authorization (EUA) for the use of the Pfizer vaccine on 5 to 11-year old children has been approved, the actual doses for the age group is still being procured. "We still have to wait for the actual dose and concentration that has to be procured. So, that will probably come by January," Herbosa said during the arrival of 871,650 doses of the Pfizer vaccine at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 on Thursday. Herbosa thanked the US government and Pfizer for their continuous delivery of Pfizer vaccine doses in the country, with the latest shipment procured by the Philippine government through the Asian Development Bank. "Our goal now is to catch up to the target of 54 million fully vaccinated. We are currently at 45 million fully vaccinated. We have six vaccination days left, and hopefully, we can achieve the remaining eight million in the six days," Herbosa said. He said vaccination efforts would ramp up in Regions 3 and 4-A (Calabarzon) to make up for delays in areas affected by the recent onslaught of Typhoon Odette. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier issued the EUA for the Pfizer vaccine-noting its high efficacy rate at above 90 percent and "very mild" adverse events in its critical trial. FDA Director-General Eric Domingo said the concentration of the Pfizer vaccine for five to 11-year-old children is lower compared to the adult doses. (PNA) }

National Task Force Against Covid-19 (NTF) chief and vaccine czar, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. (PNA photo) MANILA - The coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccines donated by Germany to the Philippines through the COVAX Facility have reached more than 10 million after 1,531,000 doses of the Moderna jab arrived on Thursday. German Embassy Economic Counselor Georg Maue said the European country is happy to donate another batch in support of the Philippines' "very good and well-functioning" vaccination program. "With the pandemic continuing, we believe it's very important to build on our strongest instrument, which we have and it is still vaccination," Maue said in a media interview at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City. National Task Force Against Covid-19 (NTF) chief and vaccine czar, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., thanked Germany and the COVAX Facility for the latest donation. "We would like to thank COVAX for their continued support to the Philippines, particularly its donors, the EU (European Union), which already donated more or less 60 million doses," Galvez said. He said the donations serve as a "Christmas gift" to all Filipinos nationwide. On the other hand, he reiterated that all Filipinos who have received their second dose of a Covid-19 vaccine at least three months ago are now eligible to receive their booster shot. (PNA) }

European countries vow continued support for PH vax program

EU DONATION. The National Task Force Against Covid-19 and diplomats from the European Union (EU) countries receive the vaccine donations for the Philippines on Wednesday (Dec. 15, 2021) at the NAIA Terminal 3 in Pasay City. Their donations are part of the largest single-day delivery of vaccines reaching over 10 million doses. (PNA photo by Joey O. Razon) MANILA - At least three European countries have expressed to continue their support to the Philippines in accessing vaccines against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). This, as nearly 7 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines donated by Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom arrived on Wednesday, which are part of over 10 million vaccine doses delivered in the country, the highest single-day delivery of Covid-19 vaccines to date. Two batches of Moderna vaccines donated by the German government arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport -- one in the afternoon with 856,800 doses and the other batch in the evening with 2,840,100 doses. In total, 3,696,900 doses of Moderna vaccine were donated by the German government through the COVAX Facility. "We regard it important to support the Philippine efforts in the Covid response for a fast and sustainable recovery, and trust that these vaccines will be used in the upcoming vaccination drive contributing to the vaccination of minors in the context of necessary reopening of schools as well as to the boosters of healthcare workers and front-liners," German Ambassador to the Philippines Anke Reiffenstuel said in a media interview. She added that with the vaccine donations, Germany is living up to its commitment to international solidarity and cooperation, especially in times of crisis. On the other hand, the Dutch government donated 3,055,200 doses of Janssen vaccines. "I'm very happy that we can support the Vax to the Max Campaign of the Filpino government and very pleased that we can do that together with the European partner, so it's team Europe at work," Dutch Ambassador to the Philippines Saskia de Lang said. European Union Ambassador to the Philippines Luc Veron also joined Reiffenstuel and de Lang during the vaccine arrival. Meanwhile, the UK donated another 214,500 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, bringing its total vaccine donation to the Philippines to around 6 million doses to date. "On behalf of the British Embassy in Manila, I am very delighted that we are able to make another bilateral donation to the Philippines," said British Embassy Deputy Head of Mission Alastair Totty. Totty said London will continue to support the Philippine government in its vaccination drive by expanding vaccine donations "to ensure equitable access of vaccines around the world, especially to countries like the Philippines". National Task Force Against Covid-19 Assistant Secretary Wilben Mayor has thanked the governments of Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK for the fresh jab donations. Mayor said the Moderna vaccines donated by Germany will be allocated for the primary shots of minors and the booster shots for the healthcare workers and front-liners. The Janssen jabs from the Dutch government will be sent to island provinces especially for the far-flung areas, while the AstraZeneca donation of the British government will be allocated for the next round of the national vaccination campaign on Thursday and Friday. This week alone, the Philippines is expecting a delivery of a total of 14,525,700 coronavirus vaccine doses from six European states, Veron said. For the EU, this donation by the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, France, Spain, and Austria is a "strong gesture of solidarity" to Manila's fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). "Developing, sharing, and distributing vaccines against Covid-19 is among the most pressing challenges we face today," Veron said. "By delivering this large amount of vaccines at a critical period, the EU and its Member States stand in full solidarity with the Philippines. It is in our mutual interest to confront this global pandemic and end it as soon as possible," he added. Veron said an additional 9.9 million vaccine doses are expected to be donated by EU member states through the COVAX Facility by the end of the year. The EU and its member states are so far the biggest donors of Covid-19 vaccines in the world. Last week, the EU together with the World Health Organization also donated 200 oxygen concentrators and relevant consumables worth over PHP7 million to the Department of Health. The oxygen cylinders were distributed to 11 health facilities, as far as Batanes General Hospital in the north and Zamboanga City Medical Center in the south. (PNA) }
