Cerebral infarction, commonly known as ischemic stroke, has a high mortality rate and causes severe damage to nervous cells in the brain owing to the loss of oxygen, which results in limiting body movements. Several technologies, including physiotherapy and brain stimulation techniques, are being developed and tested for the rehabilitation of brain nervous cells damaged by a stroke. In particular, low-intensity focused ultrasound is expected to be effective for rehabilitating neurological diseases such as stroke, as it can excite or inhibit nerve cells by delivering mechanical energy with high precision at the desired position, while ultrasound is penetrating the cranium without requiring a surgical operation. ....

A KAIST team s mathematical modelling shows that the topographic tiling of cortical maps originates from bottom-up projections from the periphery.
Researchers have explained how the regularly structured topographic maps in the visual cortex of the brain could arise spontaneously to efficiently process visual information. This research provides a new framework for understanding functional architectures in the visual cortex during early developmental stages.
A KAIST research team led by Professor Se-Bum Paik from the Department of Bio and Brain Engineering has demonstrated that the orthogonal organization of retinal mosaics in the periphery is mirrored onto the primary visual cortex and initiates the clustered topography of higher visual areas in the brain. ....

INRS's ALLS laboratory has acquired new and more efficient laser facilities

 E-Mail
Unique in Canada, the Advanced Laser Light Source Laboratory (ALLS) of the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) has begun upgrading the power of its lasers in early 2020. Under the responsibility of Professor François Légaré, the ALLS infrastructure has received more than $12 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and the Quebec government to boost the performance of its infrared lasers. This co-funding will allow INRS research members to remain leaders in this strategic field for the future.
Ultimately, this extensive work will provide better access to even more efficient facilities, which are unique in Canada. Operating this variety of high-intensity lasers, including the most powerful laser in the country, allows for numerous applications, whether in basic research (probing and controlling matter) or applied research (high-resolution imaging with medical and environmental applications). Moreover, the ALLS laboratory offers u ....

Freesound iniciates the Freesound Licensing project thanks to a Grant for the Web grant

 E-Mail
Freesound, the sound exchange platform of the Music Technology Research Group (MTG) of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) of the UPF, has obtained a Mid Level Grant awarded by the Grant for the Web initiative to promote building monetization tools and encourage research on how web monetization can benefit specific communities. This award is very significant as it recognizes the promotion of open access digital culture, explain the promoters of the MTG project.
With this grant we will start the new project Freesound Licensing, a platform to help content creators monetize their sounds by re-licensing them to content users that need usage rights beyond those allowed by the sounds original CC restrictions. ....
