Computer simulations of cells evolving over tens of thousands of generations reveal why some organisms retain a disused switch mechanism that turns on under severe stress, changing some of their characteristics. Maintaining this hidden switch is one means for organisms to maintain a high degree of gene expression stability under normal conditions.
Tomato hornworm larvae are green in warmer regions, making camouflage easier, but black in cooler temperatures so that they can absorb more sunlight. This phenomenon, found in some organisms, is called phenotypic switching. Normally hidden, this switching is activated in response to dangerous genetic or ....

A new tool to facilitate quicker, error-free software design

 E-Mail
Any building project requires the formulation of a series of initial plans prior to starting construction to serve as a basis and guide for the whole process. A similar procedure is followed in software development, with the inclusion of a specific step known as modelling. The process is equivalent to the production of a set of plans for a building before its construction, explained Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) Faculty of Computer Science, Multimedia and Telecommunications professor and member of the SOM Research Lab research group -from the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3)-, Robert Clarisó.
Engineers use modelling to describe a software system from a specific perspective, such as the data it will use, its components or the way they expect it to function. Going back to the building project example, the plans would be the models , which can be used for guidance during the development stage, as well as for carrying out simulations and tests. ....

Research!America and the Rita Allen Foundation are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2021 Civic Engagement Microgrant Initiative. Now in its third year, the microgrant program provides funding to graduate student and postdoc-led science policy groups from across the U.S. to develop and lead outreach activities in their local communities.
The 2021 Civic Engagement Microgrant Initiative is providing funding for 19 groups whose projects include podcasts, roundtable discussions, data visualization projects, and policy-orientated science fairs. Four grants will be used to start-up new groups. All activities will be conducted virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly 50 applications were received, a 50% increase from last year. The program is supported by a grant from the Rita Allen Foundation. ....

Researchers in South Korea have developed a phototherapy technology that can significantly increase efficiency while reducing the pain of chemotherapy and minimizing side effects after treatment. The President of Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Seok-Jin Yoon announced that a research team led by Dr. Sehoon Kim at the Theragnosis Research Center (KU-KIST Graduate School of Converging Science and Technology) has developed a cancer-targeted phototherapeutic agent that promises complete elimination of cancer cells without side effects. It involves only one injection and repeated phototherapy. This development was made th ....
