Can you win against automation?

We live in a world where robots increasingly build our cars, algorithms trade stocks and computers translate texts. Robotics, digitalization and artificial intelligence are transforming numerous professions. Some jobs are disappearing, while other new ones are being created. The online game The Automated Life now enables users to try out how they might survive in an increasingly automated world of work. The game was developed in the Center for Humans and Machines at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development. ....

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 48 million Americans are sickened by foodborne illnesses each year, costing the economy more than $15 billion. To combat this persistent problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other government agencies are prioritizing improved safety measures across all sectors of food production, processing, distribution and preparation.
A core element of these efforts is better technology-enabled food traceability. Northern Arizona University assistant professor Abolfazl Razi of NAU s School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems recently joined a multidisciplinary project funded by the U.S. Department of Agricu ....

Birds breathe with greater efficiency than humans due to the structure of their lungs looped airways that facilitate air flows that go in one direction a team of researchers has found through a series of lab experiments and simulations.
The findings will appear Fri., March 19 in the journal
Physical Review Letters (to be posted between 10 and 11 a.m. EDT).
The study, conducted by researchers at New York University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology, also points to smarter ways to pump fluids and control flows in applications such as respiratory ventilators. ....
