Keeping it cool: New approach to thermal protection in outdoor wearable electronics

Wearable devices and biosensors are prone to heating up, especially under sunlight. However, conventional radiative coolers contain metallic materials, which limits wireless communications. Now scientists from Korea and the USA have developed a new type of radiative cooler using perforated polymers that keep the gadgets cool and fully functional under heat, paving the way for thermally protected wearable devices for health monitoring. ....

Sweden's quantum computer project shifts up a gear

Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation is almost doubling the annual budget of the research initiative Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology, WACQT, based at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. This will allow the centre to shift up a gear and set even higher goals - especially in its development of a quantum computer. Two international workshops will kick-start this new phase.
Quantum technology has enormous potential and it is important that Sweden has the necessary skills in the area. During the short time since the center was founded, WACQT has built up a qualified research environment, established collaborations with Swedish industry and succeeded in developing qubits with proven problem-solving ability. How artificial intelligence can help curb traffic accidents in cities

Despite pandemic-driven restrictions on movement, there were over 12,000 accidents in Madrid in 2020, leading to 31 fatalities. In Barcelona, there were more than 5,700 collisions, causing 14 deaths. Pedestrian and vehicle safety is a priority, which is why a research project at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) is harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to make decisions that will make cities safer. The researchers have looked into the correlation between the complexity of certain urban areas and the likelihood of an accident occurring there.
According to the researchers, the data they have gathered can be used to train neural networks to detect probable hazards in an area and work out patterns associated with this high risk potential. The researchers, headed by Cristina Bustos and Javier Borge, are working with algorithms that will aid traffic authorities in reducing the likelihood of accidents in urban environments. ....
