Led by Virginia Tech, the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative s (CCI) Southwest Virginia node received eight multidisciplinary grants to advance the field in research areas such as 5G, artificial intelligence, and automated systems, paving the way for additional extramural funding. Twenty-seven cybersecurity research collaboration grants funded cyber research initiatives across Virginia, totaling more than $4 million.
Virginia Tech is an influential research university and strives to increase its research initiatives every year, said Gretchen Matthews, director of the Southwest Virginia Node and professor in the department of mathematics in the College of Science at Virginia Tech. Having the Southwest Virgin ....

Tidal hydroelectric power plants of the future will be able to generate green electricity significantly more efficient by using optimized turbines. Engineers from the University Otto von Guericke of Magdeburg are developing turbine blades with built-in motors. These integrated drives ensure that during each revolution, the turbine blades adjust optimally to the water flow, and thus avoid the dangerous stall condition.
This term describes the separation of flow away from the surface of turbine blades, airplane wings or rotor blades. Stall means that lift forces that power the turbines or keep a plane in the air suddenly drop, while the drag forces increase dramatically. In turbines, this leads to a loss of efficiency, and over longer periods of time, to material failures and fatigu ....

A combination therapy for treating severe neurological childhood disorders

 E-Mail
A study aiming to develop a new therapeutic technique could bring a revolution in our approach to treating rare, fatal Sanfilippo syndrome, a disorder that affects children as young as 2 years old and leads to childhood dementia and premature death.
We are using a combination of gene therapy, stem cells and small molecules to restore metabolic defects in the patient s brain cells says Dr. Alexey Pshezhetsky, Professor at CHU Ste-Justine and lead GlycoNet Investigator on this project. First results in the mouse models of the disease are very encouraging.
Sanfilippo syndrome belongs to a group of rare diseases known as lysosomal storage disorders. ....
