In March, Louise Jessop and her family celebrated her eldest son s 18th birthday, a milestone he never reached.
At two and half years old, Dylan Jessop was diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome, a condition which affects the brain and is one of a group of conditions sometimes known as childhood dementia.
Dylan sadly passed away in July 2015 at just 12 years old.
You never get over it, Mrs Jessop said.
We just had in March what would have been his 18th birthday.
Mrs Jessop is speaking about her loss to raise awareness for her son s condition.
She said it was emotional to pass the milestones that Dylan had missed out on. ....

A combination therapy for treating severe neurological childhood disorders

A study aiming to develop a new therapeutic technique could bring a revolution in our approach to treating rare, fatal Sanfilippo syndrome, a disorder that affects children as young as 2 years old and leads to childhood dementia and premature death.
We are using a combination of gene therapy, stem cells and small molecules to restore metabolic defects in the patient s brain cells says Dr. Alexey Pshezhetsky, Professor at CHU Ste-Justine and lead GlycoNet Investigator on this project. First results in the mouse models of the disease are very encouraging.
Sanfilippo syndrome belongs to a group of rare diseases known as lysosomal storage disorders. ....

A Massey University spokesman said the research would inform and contribute to other research underway around the world to find an effective treatment for Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIA, also known as Sanfilippo syndrome in humans.
“[It] is an uncommon but devastating genetic disease that causes fatal brain damage. It is described as a type of childhood dementia and most patients do not reach adulthood, according to Sanfilippo Children’s Foundation. One in 70,000 children are born with the inherited condition.”
The disease has been found to naturally occur in Huntaway dogs, which resulted in them being chosen for the experiment, the spokesman said. ....
