Updated 4/21/2021 8:21 PM The groundbreaking ceremony for the Salient Community Garden will take place on Earth Day from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at 1141 Bode Road, behind Adventist Church in Elgin. Everyone can sign up for a garden bed on that day.
The one-acre fruit, vegetable, and flower garden is intended to foster community by having family, friends, and neighbors working alongside each other to plant and harvest together. The Salient Garden is for all generations. The benefits of having a community garden include food production, improved nutrition, exercise, improving the environment, mental health, and expanding education and training in horticulture. A garden can be a place to meditate or enjoy quiet moments. One study indicates that gardens reduce crime and provide a safe place for youth to explore nature and community. ....
