Confusion surrounding Alaska’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout has led to some Alaskans trying to book vaccination appointments before they’re eligible to receive the vaccine, state health officials said Saturday.
Tessa Walker Linderman, who helps lead the state’s vaccination effort, and Dr. Anne Zink, Alaska’s chief medical officer, said in an interview that they’ve heard about instances of older Alaskans attempting to make appointments over the weekend via the state website, even though they are not yet eligible.

52,900 more doses of COVID-19 vaccine will be headed to Alaska in January

Print article
Alaska’s January shipments of COVID-19 vaccine will include nearly 53,000 new doses from drug companies Pfizer and Moderna, state health officials said Wednesday.
That’s about 7,000 less than the amount received in December, but close to what was expected. Health officials didn’t say exactly when the doses will arrive, but it will likely be early in the new year.
These vaccine doses come on top of shipments of the required second doses of each vaccine, which will also be shipped out next month.
The state is currently finalizing recommendations from its advisory committee that will determine which Alaskans to include in the next round — Phase 1B — of COVID-19 vaccination, and plans to share those decisions with the press and the public on Thursday, said Tessa Walker Linderman, who heads up the state’s vaccine task force.

“We are still in Phase 1A in terms of who Alaska is vaccinating, but discussions of future phases are happening.”
Federal health officers are shipping doses of both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines as fast as they can be manufactured and packaged. Dr. Anne Zink, Alaska’s Chief Medical Officer says the state received about 60,000 doses of the vaccine this month, about 10 times more than expected.

Health care has been at the center of the limelight since this past March when the COVID-19 pandemic really began affecting Alaska.
Gov. Mike Dunleavy preemptively issued emergency orders meant to preserve hospital capacity in the event of case surges, shutting down elective surgeries and outside visitors.
For hospitals and health care companies, which often make the bulk of their profit on elective surgeries and outpatient procedures, that was a serious financial hit even as their staffing was slammed with new work and safety protocols.

Initial allocations of Moderna vaccine arrive in Alaska; Alaska’s work to distribute, allocate and administer vaccine continues

Wednesday AM
(SitNews) Anchorage, Alaska - The second COVID-19 vaccine authorized for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) arrived in Alaska on Monday. Distribution and administration of this vaccine, made by Moderna, will occur this week in Alaska alongside the continued roll-out of the Pfizer vaccine which started last Monday.
As of Sunday, 5,674 doses of Pfizer vaccine have been administered in Alaska and reported to Alaska’s VacTraAK immunization information system.
The Moderna vaccine received emergency use authorization from the FDA on Friday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended Saturday that Americans aged 18 and older receive the Moderna vaccine under emergency use. CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield signed the ACIP recommendation, which began distribution of the Moderna vaccine on Sunday.

Mayor Dial is requesting the Assembly to support his proposed resolution which calls on merchants and service providers to refrain from discriminating against any individual by denying that person access to goods or services based upon their COVID-19 vaccination status or failure to provide that information.
According to the CDC, individuals should receive a wallet-sized vaccination card or printout that tells the specific COVID-19 vaccine they received, the date they received it, and where they received it. The CDC is not recommending or requiring that vaccination cards be presented publicly on demand for access to services.

Second Vaccine Arrives in Alaska

Credit Foundation Health Partners
State health officials say some 26,800 doses of a second, new COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Alaska yesterday (Monday).
“Dec. 21, shipments of Moderna have arrived in Alaska.”
That’s Dr. Tessa Walker Linderman, is the DHSS lead for the Alaska COVID-19 Vaccination Task Force. Dr. Linderman is a Nurse Consultant for the Division of Public Health.
She told reporters yesterday the Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use authorization to Moderna  just last Friday (Dec. 18) for this vaccine. People age 18 and up can get it.
The Moderna vaccine has at least one big advantage over the Pfizer (FEYE-zer) vaccine that started rolling out in Alaska last week: logistics. Pfizer’s must be held at extremely cold temperatures that regular freezers can’t reach. After thawing, Pfizer’s vaccine can only be kept at refrigerator temperatures for a few days.
