THE Scottish pop group, Marmalade, were riding high in 1969. They had begun the year at the top of the charts with their version of the Beatles’ Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da. After being knocked off the top spot by The Scaffold for one week, they regained it for another fortnight. They were the first Scottish band to reach that exalted chart position. “We fought hard to get into the charts and, believe me, we will fight even harder to retain our top ranking”, band leader Dean Ford told the Evening Times at the beginning of January 1969. “The year that has gone was our breakthrough year. All our records did well for us [two singles, Lovin’ Things and Wait for Me, Mary Anne, had reached number six and 30 respectively), building up to a great finish to the year with Ob-la-di.” ....
