SIR – For many years we have believed that we live in a rich country – one that can afford top-class services such as the NHS, social support and good roads, railways and other infrastructure, and can buy whatever food it needs from abroad rather than growing it.
SIR – I was angry to read in your report (October 20) that the NHS is blaming patients for the low uptake of Covid booster vaccines.

It takes no consideration of the hardship that publicans across the country have faced over the previous trading year. Publicans make money from alcohol and food sales. In my experience as a publican, I have never made a serious amount on soft-drink sales alone. We must also consider the damage that such a policy would do to the wider supply chain. Breweries ultimately rely on selling alcoholic products...
