0 officials believe isis-k was behind the attacks, but they re still working to confirm that. the state department had been warning for days of a terror attack at the airport. we have reporters standing by. let s start with barbara starr at the pentagon. what do we know about these military members who were killed and what we re expected to hear from the pentagon? in just a very short while we are expecting to hear from general frank mckenzie, the head of the u.s. central command which oversees military operations in the gulf, the middle east, afghanistan. we expect to hear from him. i see john kirby there. the general will have some brief opening remarks. we ll obviously address the events in kabul today as well as the evacuation mission and where we are and where we re going. we ll take questions. i will moderate the questions. i will call on you. please before you ask your question identify yourselves and your outlet so the general has an idea who he s talking to. just a remin ....

Forces began the evacuation to date, approximately 88,000 have safely departed from afghanistan. every 39 minutes yesterday a plane departed kabul airport. these numbers are a testament to the hard working and brave service members carrying out this mission. in cooperation with the state department, i can also tell you that there are more than 10,000 people currently at this time at the airport awaiting departure. this is a snapshot in time, and as we said yesterday, we ll continue to change as more people are able to come onto the airfield and as flights depart. as i said yesterday, in order for this throughput to remain steady, we depend on capacity and efficiency of our intermediate staging bases and safe havens. we are appreciative of the support and rely on our allies ....

Mission right up until the last day. i think what i would add for the great answer mr. kirby gave, as you ve seen in the last three days, the complexity and the amount of aircraft moving in and out. so the capability to continue to sequence and plan for the actual requirements that leave on a daily basis is going to be made on the ground. as you ve seen, we have that capability to manage quite a lot of throughput and be able to put the right things on those aircraft as they come in and as they leave. john, who is guarding the u.s. embassy right now? who will guard after the u.s. military pulls out? are there any contingencies? do you have an agreement with the taliban? in terms of the airport, do you have an agreement with any nato allies, like the turks, to keep the airport open after the u.s. ....

MSNBC Katy Tur Reports August 24, 2021 18:10:00

This week is as military start leaving, we ll start to probably see some flights that are a combination of both u.s. military and evacuees. but the reality is there are only several more days for them to have the kind of throughput we ve seen of thousands of evacuees getting out in a day, a flight out every 45 minutes. we only have a couple more days for that kind of output. help us understand the range of decisions facing president biden. you ve got allies at home and abroad saying stay. you ve got the taliban saying go and if you stay, there will be a red line with consequences. then you ve got the president s own belief he was right to end the war and exiting would have been tough. the first is tactical. ....

Safer for americans, and these siv applicants, pretty creative ideas they re putting into place, and obviously, it s a dense and dangerous environment. we have a legitimate counterterrorism threat there, terrorism threat around the airport that we have to take seriously, but once we get them on to the field, then they go through a whole series of processing and manifesting, as i said, medical screening, make sure they have food and water, and we try to get them on the very next flight out that s available. and these flights, at least yesterday, rachel, they were leaving one almost every hour. now, we hope to be able to continue that sort of pace going forward. obviously, it s weather dependent. it s population dependent, but that s the kind of throughput that we re trying to reach so that we can keep these numbers up for as long as possible. should we expect to see more evacuations, more transit to the airport aided by u.s. helicopters? ....
