Initial unemployment claims in the Lynchburg area spiked in the first half of December, according to Virginia Career Works. There were 274 initial claims filed the week of Dec. 12, preceded by 354 initial claims the week before. Both numbers are significantly higher than the initial claims filed week-to-week during the last three months. Initial claims had dropped to 127 the week of Nov. 28.
