But, according to Smartfood’s website, the brand hit grocery shelves in 1985 “with a very smart idea: to create great tasting, ready-to-eat popcorn with quality ingredients.” And as far as Krispy Kreme’s nutritional aspects, its Original Glazed has 190 calories, 50 calories less than another national brand and 185 milligrams less sodium. (Although a Krispy Kreme Original Glazed is a bit smaller.) When Smartfood creators Andrew Martin and Annie Withey started making their cheese popcorn, they used real cheese, not like the cheese popcorn that was already on the market that seemed to glow in the dark.
