Chauvin trial day 7 In the time reserved for motion hearings yesterday morning Judge Cahill heard defense counsel Eric Nelson’s offer of proof on George Floyd’s May 2019 encounter with the Minneapolis police. Floyd was high at the time and in medical distress. Previously ruled inadmissible, Judge Cahill indicated he would revisit the issue and took it under advisement. He indicated he would announce his ruling on Thursday, as I understood his comments. My assessment is that the evidence may be admissible in part insofar as it bears on the cause of death, but it is otherwise not coming in.
The lawyer for Derek Chauvin, the former police officer charged in relation to George Floyd’s death, asked the judge overseeing the case to delay the trial , saying he was concerned the $27m (€22.6m) civil settlement announced last week between the city of Minneapolis and the Floyd family has tainted the jury pool.
Mr Chauvin’s attorneys have said the timing of the settlement left them “gravely concerned” over the fate of the trial
Friday’s announcement that the city will pay a record $27 million to Floyd’s family to settle a wrongful-death lawsuit renews uncertainty about the case.
