The political cannibalism in the FNM has historical precedent in the Pindling and Ingraham govts

The political cannibalism in the FNM has historical precedent in the Pindling and Ingraham govts
Dear Editor,
In the lead up to the 2012 general election — which would prove to be then Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham’s last as leader of the Free National Movement (FNM) — former Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce President Peter Turnquest was a rising political star, having allegedly been courted by both the FNM and the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP).
Nine years later, Turnquest is now being unceremoniously treated like the black sheep of the FNM family, amid rumors circulating in the The Tribune and
The Nassau Guardian dailies that he and Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis’ relationship is strained.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Kamalame Cay, the award-winning private island resort off of Andros, yesterday announced the launch of COCO Bahama Seaplanes, which in turn will offer scholarships for aspiring Bahamian pilots.
Scheduled to launch in February 2021, COCO Bahama Seaplanes will operate with a fleet of state-of-the-art amphibious seaplanes, two-pilot crews, world-class safety standards and a commitment to help unlock millions of dollars in economic development across The Bahamas, kick-starting fragile local economies and celebrating the unique beauty and offerings of the Bahamian Family Islands.
Jet Nassau will be COCO Bahama Seaplanes’ fixed-base operator (FBO), with both companies saying they are “thrilled” about the “strategic partnership”.

Staff cuts 'last resort' says Bahamasair chairman - The Nassau Guardian

Staff cuts ‘last resort’ says Bahamasair chairman
A Bahamasair plane sits on the runway in this file photo.
Cash-strapped Bahamasair is looking at “innovative” cost containment measures, with its Chairman Tommy Turnquest insisting that job cuts would be a last resort.
While Bahamasair has already implemented two revenue enhancement measures – a domestic fare increase and a charge for the first checked bag on its international flights – Turnquest said the airline has not yet nailed down all of its spending cuts.
“We are looking at cost containment measures and a number of cost reduction measures. I don’t want to say anymore than that because it’s a process,” he said.

Bahamasair to reduce Cuba fights following COVID-19 concerns

Bahamasair to reduce Cuba fights following COVID-19 concerns
Chairman of Bahamasair Tommy Turnquest.
Bahamasair is set to take another hit to its already depressed financial state as Cuba has made the decision to reduce flights into the country – from The Bahamas, the United States, Panama, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti – due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19, the airline’s Chairman Tommy Turnquest confirmed yesterday, adding that Bahamasair’s Cuba flights have been robust since the airline reopened the route.
“We’ll make whatever adjustments we have to make,” Turnquest said. “These are indeed challenging times.”
According to Turnquest, Cuban authorities issued new aviation regulations on the weekend mandating that beginning in January, international flights into the country are to be reduced and COVID-19-negative test result protocols tightened.

Bahamasair announces fee adjustments

Domestic rates see increase
First checked bag no longer free on int’l flights
NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Bahamasair, the country’s national flag carrier, announced today there will be changes to domestic fares and baggage fees effective January 4, 2021.
The cost of domestic flights will be increasing, the company announced, stating: “The airline has not had a domestic fare increase in the past eight years, and these adjustments have become necessary due to increase[d] operational costs.”
A chart provided by Bahamasair reflected the new fares that will take effect.

Sir Franklyn defends $49m Jack's Bay goal

* Near-$120m real estate sales to fund build-out
* Argues that projections 'very conservative'
By NEIL HARTNELL
nhartnell@tribunemedia.net
Sir Franklyn Wilson is defending as "very conservative" projections that the Jack's Bay project will hit up to $48.9m in annual real estate sales by 2023, adding: "We're not selling this like Fried Fish."
The Eleuthera mixed-use resort community's chairman voiced confidence it will shrug off the COVID-19 pandemic and strike its targets because it is seeking "price points lower than what exists" at rival developments such as Albany and Baker's Bay.
Speaking out after Tribune Business obtained forecasts showing Jack's Bay is targeting some $119.652m in real estate sales over its next three financial years to 2023, Sir Franklyn said this would largely be generated from "seven-figure" purchases by the 40 so-called "founder" investors the project is seeking to give it critical mass.

Developer's offering to 'regain momentum'

nhartnell@tribunemedia.net
A Bahamian resort community yesterday said it would use the proceeds of a newly-launched preference share offering to "regain momentum" lost to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sir Franklyn Wilson, chairman of Jack’s Bay Developers, told Tribune Business there was no set closing date or target amount that the Eleuthera-based project was seeking to raise from investors via an offering priced at 6.25 percent and with a minimum $50,000 investment.
"We're doing whatever we can to accelerate the pace of development," he told this newspaper. "We're in a position where today, as soon as this COVID-19 pandemic thing is behind us, we can do what we want to do. The more funding we can raise, the more we can do in the interim. We're using the down time to make the place better to come to.

Web patrons, utility customers warned to brace for pain

nhartnell@tribunemedia.net
Web shop patrons and Bahamasair passengers will be the first feel to feel the pain of tax and fee increases sparked by COVID-19's economic devastation, a Cabinet minister revealed yesterday.
Senator Kwasi Thompson, the newly-appointed minister of state for finance, told the Senate that the Government plans to finally implement the long-anticipated levy on gaming patron winnings from New Year's Day onwards.
And he argued that it was "imperative" for the Government to accelerate long overdue reform of loss-making state-owned enterprises (SOEs) such as Bahamasair and the Water & Sewerage Corporation given the combined $408m drain they have imposed on Bahamian taxpayers this year in the form of subsidies - a figure that is expected to sharply increase due to COVID-19.
