Around 100 people were killed by "terrorists" attacking two villages in western Niger, the local mayor said Sunday, the latest in a string of civilian massacres that have rocked the jihadist-plagued Tillaberi region.
The attacks on the villages of Tchoma Bangou and Zaroumadareye on Saturday were waged by "terrorists who came riding about a hundred motorcycles," said Almou Hassane, the mayor of the Tondikiwindi commune that administers both villages.
"There were up to 70 dead in Tchoma Bangou and 30 dead in Zaroumadareye," he told AFP, adding he had just returned from the scene of the attacks.
The two villages are 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of the capital Niamey.

The death toll in attacks on villages in border regions of Niger has risen to more than 100. Attackers struck as first-round presidential results were announced.

Attackers on motorbikes swept through two villages in western Niger, leaving scores dead in each, a local mayor said on Sunday.
The attacks, on the villages of Tchoma Bangou and Zaroumadareye in the jihadi-plagued Tillaberi region, are only the latest in a string of massacres of civilians. They took place as first-round national presidential results were announced.

NIAMEY, NIGER - About 100 people were killed in Niger, amid the presidential election, in an attack on two villages in the west, one of the worst massacres of civilians in this country and in the Sahel regularly targeted by jihadi groups. 
"We have just returned from the scene of the attacks" carried out Saturday. "In Tchoma Bangou there were up to 70 dead and in Zaroumadareye 30 dead," Almou Hassane, the mayor of Tondikiwindi, the town that administers the two villages, in the Ouallam department, told AFP Sunday. 
"There were also 25 wounded, some of whom were evacuated to Niamey and Ouallam for treatment," he added.

There have been increased killings in the jihadist-dominated Tillaberi region.

He said the attacks on Tchoma Bangou and Zaroumadareye villages were carried out by “terrorists who came riding about a hundred motorcycles”.
Around 70 were murdered in Tchoma Bangou and 30 dead in Zaroumadareye.
The massacre coincided with the announcement of results for the first round of Niger’s presidential election.
President Muhammadu Buhari, in a statement on Sunday, condemned the killings.
He said it was another call for united action by African leaders against terrorism.

One hundred people were killed on Saturday in attacks on two villages in western Niger, Prime Minister Brigi Rafini said following one of deadliest days in recent memory for a country ravaged by Islamist violence.
Mr Rafini announced the death toll in remarks broadcast on national television on Sunday from a visit to the zone, near the border with Mali. He did not say who was responsible for the attacks.
