Factors behind Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action grant wins
The University of Oslo in Norway is punching above its weight in terms of the number of Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Individual Fellowships awarded in the announcement by the European Commission on 8 February, hosting 25 overall, including 11 in the humanities faculty alone.
This is despite MSCA fellowships being among the most competitive and prestigious awards in Europe, aimed at supporting the best and the most promising scientists. There are indications, for instance, that the MSCA fellows (grantees) perform better on average both before and after the grant.

Foreign PhDs are ‘lifeblood’ of universities’ research effort

In recent years, half of New Zealand’s annual total of 10,000 PhD students have come from overseas, but that number is falling because of border restrictions. Victoria University of Wellington’s Vice-Provost (Academic) Margaret Hyland said its PhD enrolments fell 5% last year when it had been anticipating growth of about 5%.
Hyland said a downturn in foreign PhD candidates would have a big impact across the entire university system. “PhDs are an incredibly important part of our research workforce. They are really the lifeblood of our research effort in the universities.” ....

Facebook is expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) doctoral programme to the United Kingdom as part of a four-year research partnership with University College London, the company announced on Tuesday 23 February. Students of the programme will spend time at both UCL and Facebook as they pursue projects that can contribute to the company’s efforts to publish open-source research, writes Katie Collins for

Facebook’s efforts in the world of artificial intelligence can be seen across all of its products, from using machine learning to provide content in different languages, to tracking hand movements in Oculus VR, to helping remove hate speech and other harmful content. The company works in collaboration with the global academic community in order to ensure that its own research complements and is also accessible to other AI researchers through the open-sourcing of its work. ....
