Rapper's words provoke police to storm university building

Rapper’s words provoke police to storm university building
At 6.30am on 16 February around 20 riot police entered the University of Lleida, near Barcelona in Spain, to arrest and imprison a rapper, on the orders of Spain’s high court.
The singer, Pablo Rivadulla Duró (32), better known as Pablo Hasél, and around 70 to 80 supporters had entered the faculty of arts and occupied the building and chained the main door the night before.
The police response led to “doors of the rectorate building [faculty of arts] being smashed down, glass shattered, chairs from the barricade being broken, fire extinguishers being fired at police and around 30 activists being registered,” Natalia Trias of the university’s press office told ....

EU says it can exclude China from EU research projects

EU says it can exclude China from EU research projects
The European Commission says it can exclude Chinese participation in Horizon Europe and other sensitive research projects using new powers to exclude third countries that do not share ‘EU values’.
Maria Cristina Russo, director for international cooperation in research and innovation at the European Commission in Brussels, said the principles of science and research cooperation were being negotiated with China based on the European Union’s policy of being “as open as possible, as closed as necessary” – a phrase often used in the management of data information.
“The Commission has designated China as an economic competitor, cooperation and negotiating partner, but also a ‘systemic rival’ and that has guided our actions,” Russo said during an online discussion on China organised by the League of European Research Universities (LERU). ....

Council sparks controversy by halting college spin-off
The decision by the council of the University of Malawi (UNIMA) to suspend a planned delinking of the university’s constituent colleges into independent universities has generated fears that the plan will ultimately be shelved for some time.
In November last year, Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera gave the go-ahead for a final bill on the delinking of UNIMA after a consultative process.
On 20 January this year, however, the council suspended the process of creating three independent universities, pending a review.
It argued that the original decision on delinking, which was made before the enabling legislation was passed, was ....

'Dirty money' from West Africa 'used to pay UK tuition fees'

‘Dirty money’ from West Africa ‘used to pay UK tuition fees’
Commissioned by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing,
The amounts spent are way above the salary levels of these prominent Nigerians, categorised as ‘politically exposed persons’ or ‘PEPs’ in anti-money laundering system jargon.
Such people are supposed to be exposed to special checks by banks and other financial institutions, although anti-money laundering legislation usually does not insist that such assessments are undertaken by educational bodies.
In any case, Page concluded, there is plenty of evidence for universities to question if they voluntarily decided to check how some Nigerian students’ fees are being paid. They “dwarf” official salaries, the report notes, pointing out that a Nigerian cabinet minister takes home roughly £16,000 (US$22,200). ....
